Here's a little Iberian Question just to throw out there on 11:06 - Jul 15 with 1599 views | BarcaBlue | The Catalans and Basques have national sides and normally play one international a year, around Xmas. I think there are 4 Catalans in the current Spain squad, Lamine, Cucarella, Olmo, Raya. Probably about 5 Basques. Spain would be favourites to win I'd say

That's just absolutely crazy.

Not really. There are small independence groups in Galicia and the Canaries but I believe they just campaign for more autonomy. Andalucia is very traditional Spanish.

Valencia has its own language, which is much the same as Catalan, but known as Valencian (or Valencia in the language itself). The language is taught in schools but I don't think there is much of a separatist movement there. In Valencian, Alicante is Alacant, and Elche is Elx. [Post edited 15 Jul 2024 12:36]

One of only four out there according to a very unreliable information website.

No separatist movement in Valencia, currently governed by a right wing / far right coalition. Mallorcan is Catalan with an accent, Aranes, only spoken in one valley region of Lleida, is Catalan based but unique.

Yes, that is a real shame given Valencia's Republican roots. Alicante was the last major city to fall to Franco’s Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War, just two days before the end of the conflict. And this year marked the 85th anniversary of the rescue of 2,000 Republicans by a Welsh sea captain, who has a monument in the harbour. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/archibald-dickson-memorial [Post edited 15 Jul 2024 22:06]
