Politician standing to be leader of his political party in "trying to appeal to the opposite wing of his party" shocker!!!

I understand that Sir Keir Starmer even managed to fool Labour members that he was left wing with his election pledges in 2021.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

That's a very fair point.

I suppose I just have a particular interest in Tugendhat who I have seen since his first hustings in 2015. He strikes me as being vacuous and unprincipled but a lot of people seem to fall for his charms.

Were it me, I'd go for Cleverly or Stride, but they probably don't stand a chance.

Apparently he is the one that Starmer fears the most.

Presumably he's made a tactical choice that in order to get the attention of the cranks who make up the party membership, he needs to throw them some chicken feed early on.

It's really an indictment of how party leaders are elected nowadays. It's the same with Labour. The party membership is made up of those on the political extremes which then translates into unelectable leaders. This lot last voted for Liz Truss and Boris Johnson for goodness sake (when faced with actual choice, Sunak doesn't count).

Starmer has shown that the playbook is to appeal to the radical fringes and then lurch to the centre. It's actually a sensible move from Tugenhat, and probably a promise he never intends to fulfil.

Take it from me, Starmer has nothing to fear.

Tugendhat was interviewed on Sky News just before the election and made a complete fool of himself. And his interview on the Today programme today was full of platitudes.

The issue it seems to me is that he has a military background but no political background or nous. When interviewed not long after he was elected, he was asked what his great political idea was, and he came up with the wider share ownership that Mrs Thatcher encouraged which struck me as being bizarre.

Unfortunately for Tugendhat, the lunatic fringe is more like an entire wig.

It's going to be a battle to see who can say the most outrageous and borderline problematic stuff, which the membership will lap up.

Interesting to see that Braverman is most likely to take this to the extremes, but she seems broadly unpopular, even with the party faithful. Badenoch looks well placed to be able to appeal to party and members (but not the public at large, think she'd fair poorly in an election campaign.)

I just took part in the readers' poll on the Telegraph website.

It has Jenrick and Badenoch in the lead, with roughly twice the votes of Braverman and Tugendhat.

Mel Stride, the one I would probably vote for, were I a Tory member, is on 3%. And my fall-back, Cleverly is on 8%. They each need the support of 10 Tory MPs, so I can see at least one of them not making the ballot.

I was wrong, as they are both now in the contest, and have each got the necessary 10 supporters.

I suppose those on the moderate side of the Parliamentary party want to hedge their bets, and will opt for one of Tugendhat, Stride and Cleverly to put to the membership, depending on how they stand up to scrutiny.

It may be too late to do so, and perhaps beyond the pale, but I wonder if you might be tempted to rejoin the party in order to try to ensure a more moderate candidate is elected.

There are suggestions that Braverman is struggling to get the necessary 10 supporters.

Given this, it seems to me that Patel is the most likely from the right of the party to go to the membership, and I think she will be the next leader.

She is also the best of the candidates and putative candidates from the right of the party. I'm not saying that's a high bar but I don't think she is as extreme and incompetent as the others.
