Bobby Robson: One-on-One 00:20 - Dec 7 with 1045 views | Miaow | A piece from FourFourTwo in 2003. Bobby Robson answering readers' questions, with a few on ITFC. Some online fanzine called Those Were the Days asked the following: Is it creepy having a statue of yourself up in Ipswich? https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/bobby-robson-one-one

Bobby Robson: One-on-One on 08:32 - Dec 7 with 792 views | Churchman | Thank you for posting that. Interesting and what a phenomenal career as a player and manager. I always had mixed views about his time as England manager. His way of doing things always struck me as more suited to club management, but you can’t argue with the fact he came close to winning it in Italia 90. I always think it a little sad that he was thrown out so shabbily by Newcastle August the following year. They had of course finished 3rd in 2003 and 5th in 2004 which given the geordies expectation to win everything every year in the known universe was failure. You couldn’t make it up. But what the Newcastle people can make up is the past. So Robson is now the greatest thing since sliced bread, freedom of the City, statue outside, no doubt a rug in reception named in his honour, beloved by all - neatly forgetting they shovelled him out like a tramp stinking out the church hall fete.

The hypocrisy of those ‘best fans in the world’ is astounding. Short memories.

What is forgotten is that while the chairman Freddy Shepherd actually fired him, the supporters had been on his back for a couple of years. ‘Too old’, ‘taken us as far as he can’ etc etc. Well throwing the old codger out certainly worked. They went down the pan after that with a selection of managers barely lasting a year. You can’t help thinking the greatest fans in the world got exactly what they deserved.
