Well Ukraine is being awkward. It’s not surrendering fast enough and America hasn’t got to rob the Ukrainian corpse yet. Russia is to use Trump’s words bombing the hell out of Ukraine, clearly cheered on by Trump given he’s blinded them and is trying to starve them of defence. Maybe he has a totaliser board of deaths and injuries he can share with adoring masses each night. That should increase his popularity.
How much territory are they to give up? All of it. If I was Russia I’d demand Zelenski’s corpse or as a prisoner for trial. The American maniac’s people could act for the prosecution.
Edit: not sure Ukraine’s collapse is too far away now. Trump’s other bestie North Korea are making progress too. I wonder if America will have a national holiday to celebrate?

I actually think NATO is dead now with or without Trump. How can the other countries allow themselves to be so reliant on America again in the future? It can’t and it shouldn’t.
Assuming there is soft power that’s important. Treaties, diplomacy, mutual arrangements, trade, foreign aid for example. But if nothing else, since Putin’s rise shows hard power is also required. Russia has a small economy but a huge military. It projects that power in various ways and is considered one of the big three. It will get its empire if not blocked so will expand its industrial base. All through hard power.
I’m not advocating anything like that. People pay in lifestyle, freedom and their lives. 1000s of them in Putin’s aggression. But you need military in sufficient strength to deter, individually and collectively. In the 1970s it’d fallen to 5% GDP and remained that way up to the 1980s. That was yet another time when there was no money - IMF etc. I don’t think 5% is unreasonable even if it’s tough. Very tough.

I don’t think the orange one needs an ultimatum. America’s word is in the bin now. Trump needs playing along for now. But with that, countries that value their freedom need to gear themselves up in the way Poland is trying to do. That will take time.
A lot of European countries will hide. That’s less important than those that won’t. Germany is an interesting one, as is Canada and going forward, Japan. The economic power of these countries collectively is not small.
Can Europeans act as one? Yes. They already do. I heard an after dinner talk by the head of Camp Bastion’s medical facility the other year. A fascinating man. There were two big facilities. An American one and an international one headed by this chap. His hospital had Brits, Danes, Germans, French, Canadians and others. They worked absolutely seamlessly together and were so innovative that the techniques they developed to help the seriously injured are being used in the wider world today.

Putin has probably said that he wants all the parts of Ukraine that feel Russian to become part of Russia post any peace deal. Ukraine probably wants all territory back (including Crimea) that was taken - which is not an unfair ask.
My thought has always been, that when the USSR fell there were probably a lot of people who felt Russian more so than Ukrainian (or Latvian or Estonian etc) but got siphoned off when the new borders were drawn. Hard to know whether these people nowadays feel more Russian than anywhere else. |  |

I beleive the Donestsk Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts are the industrial heartlands of Ukraine so going back to USSR days it would have been natural for many Russians to move or be moved there for work etc. Particularly as they are geographically close to Russia anyway. I think it is a convenient happening for Putin rather than any strategic plan that a sizable minority of ethnic Russians are there. Same applies to the Baltic states. though it would not surprise me if there was a Russification (if that is a word) process going back to Stalin's era to undermine any attempts at independence by encouraging Russian population growth .
