Lots of bemoaning of the recruitment 21:20 - Mar 20 with 1378 viewsbournemouthblue

but what's the recruitment for the youth players been like?

The young left back from Chelsea, the lad from Anderlecht

Have we picked up any youths under the radar who are likely to appear out of nowhere next season and take the Championship by storm?

Norwich were quite good at this, I think they signed Madison whilst in the Prem for example, loaned him out for the season and he came back and looked the business for them before selling him onto Leicester for good money as an example

Have we found anyone like that, do we have any decent youths who are coming through

That's an element of the club we haven't had since the Bent/Ambrose/Westlake/Richards and Garvan/Haynes/Clarke/Supple years

There does seem to have been an attempt to up the level from which players are recruited with Mendel and Boniface. Only a week or so after the latter joined someone I know at the academy was enthusing about what a good player he is. Mendel has skills aplenty but looks very raw still, but certainly has a chance at Championship level.

These are a bit different to Norwich's Maddison signing as he was already an established player at Coventry.

When Chelsea are spending 60+ million on a couple of unproven youngsters, it does kind of put into perspective what we're competing against.....

Our recruitment may not have been perfect, but I don't think perfect exists for a newly promoted club that has been in teh doldrums for so long....

People often talk about the successes of Forest for example ( Elanga only cost £15 million). we don't hear about the other spends that didn't work out.... these clubs are buying up many players... some work out, some don't. That's the nature of the beast.

Totally agree. Forest have signed something like 40 players since promotion, so not a real comparison to us. I think we lack PL experience, which I have been calling for ever since promotion. Investing in the future is absolutely fine, but a few experienced heads around the training ground and changing room would have been extremely helpful in my opinion. We didn't need both Clarke and Philogene and I don't think we needed Szmodics and Hutchinson.
Now we are back in the Championship, those players will be more than handy, so you could argue we recruited well. For the PL next time round, I would like to see us sign a few older heads, even as free transfers, just to have the knowledge around the place.

Forest were really ambitious and just about squeezed into 17th in what was probably a weaker league than the one we are in this season so as you say it's not a direct comparison

I think we'll see the benefits of this big overhaul next season, much in the way did with McKenna with a lot of Cook's squad

And they also had to break the rules to do it, but of course it's paid off for them now.
