Cain Velasquez sentenced to 5 years on 23:59 - Mar 24 with 757 views | WicklowBlue | Not a follower of MMA for multiple reasons, so hadn't heard of this case. Agreed seems like a very very light sentence from the article. However not super surprising seeing as other MMA fighters convicted of civil lawsuits (after the DPP here decided they couldn't guarantee a criminal conviction) go on to the White House to represent me and other Irish citizens... https://www.rte.ie/news/2025/0317/1502522-mcgregor-white-house/ In related news, in Ireland the fall from grace from a certain Irish MMA fighter is profound, and well deserved considering the many multiple indiscretions reported on for years.

I think it was ‘light’ because it was someone he trusted that molested his kid and then shooting at the car (apparently shot at the tires to get the car to stop but it ricocheted and hit the nonces stepdad if I remember it rightly). A forum I’m on was covering this at the time and the evidence against the nonce was overwhelming apparently. And Valasquez just clearly absolutely lost his head in the moment. Understandable

I’ve never been a fan of McGregor - loads of talent but a scumbag. It was well known before he blew up and Dana used him to expand the UFC brand in Europe etc. Cain has always been a very different proposition- when he was ATT and going right through his career you didn’t get the stories that suggested he was anything but a decent bloke. The fact that most people and those who are parents will sympathise too makes a difference. But it shows what happens when you have a gun culture and how things can spiral. I’m still baffled that the family of the sex offender backed him the way they did.
