| Academy players` 10:04 - Mar 17 with 784 views | C_Jam_Blue | I was listening to Monday Night Football on 5 Live last night. There was a discussion about Max Dowman and one of the pundits said every club has an emerging young player that staff and fans think will be the next star to break through. It made me think, I don't really have a player like that in mind for us. Cam Humphreys was probably the last player I genuinely thought would become a first team regular. Are there players I am missing? do we have some genuinely hot prospects in the Academy that we might start seeing soon? | | | | |

Back in the day, we had those whispers with; R Wright. Dyer. Bent. Ambrose. Bowditch (didnt quite work out). [Post edited 17 Mar 10:09]

Depends on your definition of stolen - as a club Ipswich received a hefty sum for Ben Knights in the same way that Stevenage received a significant sum for Ryan Doherty (from us).

Yeah, Id say £1m is stolen given that Klug said he was the best player our academy had produced at that time. I dont like the system as it stands.

Although doesn't look bad money at all for a player now in L2 at Cambridge.

We dont know how he would have progressed as a big fish in a little pond at Ipswich. It still irks me that he went for a relatively small sum at the time. No probs if you disagree, thats OK.

The academy system is geared towards big clubs hoovering up the best players and throwing out what they can’t use. They can pick up anyone they please. So they might spend a million plus say another million for the parents. Chump change to Man City., but not to the parents or the young player. Is it worth having an academy? Despite skewed and stupid rules, I believe so. Some clubs do make it work. Ours is pretty hopeless because Evans starved it of money and it just drifted. Scouting, community and all that jazz - in the bin. It was left to the likes of Klug to poke it along. The current owners appear to be more serious about it with Cat 1, facilities in the summer etc, but it’s going to take years and a lot of money to offer anything much. Until then, big clubs throw outs like Somto Boniface from Chelsea are probably our best source of young players.

As you say we have no idea how he would have progressed had he stayed here. I’m guessing that Man City has much better youth facilities than us - and at the time much much better. From a money point of view, no contest. But if he had played first team football here then each match would have been ten times better than U18 football. I’ve completely forgotten how close or far he was from the first team here.

Isn’t that what Brentford used to do? They realised that in London they could never complete with the big capital clubs and so offered trials to those players who were cast off by those clubs. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He was our highest rated player in decades. Who knows how he would have worked out if he had stayed, but there is no way we would have sold for £1m if we had a choice.
