Impact of the 6th place battle on automatic place 10:30 - Mar 20 with 1302 viewsunstableblue

Saw this exchange on Boro forum, and it’s a good point:

Race for 6th has some interesting repercussions, with Ipswich going to Southampton on the 2nd last gameweek and us going to Wrexham on the last.

Ideal scenario... Southampton secure 6th against Ipswich, leaving Wrexham with nothing to play for against us.

Could all be wrapped up by then, but I think 2nd will still be in play on the final day.
I think millwall will be out of it but I agree that us and ipswich will be within 3 points of each other one way or another

I also saw someone stating Hull would make it into the playoffs. Sheff Weds this weekend gets them back on track. I thought they might fall away.

I guess the key for Town is to not make Saints away a must win - we have 2 losses and a draw in our 9 games.

A win Saturday makes that more likely.

Given Southampton's current form it's more likely they will have a place in the top six secured by the time they play us.

Although that was the scenario when they went to Elland Road when we were at home to Huddersfield on the last day, and that didn't help Leeds much.

I think that was probably more down to Leeds knowing the game was up; there wasn't a cat in hell's chance we would lose against Huddersfield.

The Saints game could have a very similar feel to the Coventry away game a couple of seasons back

Southampton will be in 5th place by then imo.

I think Southampton will win the playoffs, likely from 5th place. There’s probably a stronger argument to want them to win games at the moment rather than lose them.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?
