HS2 - what an embarrassing shambles 18:24 - Mar 23 with 832 viewsWicksy

There's no track in the country to test the trains at 225mph.
I'd have thought that was pretty obvious.
So now they have to either build a 225mph test track, send them to China for testing or run them slower.

How have they only just realised this?!

I live near the Old Dalby test track which is where the HS1 trains were tested, I'm surprised that's not up the job

Pretty sure HS1 is only 180 mph

186 mph although speeds of just over 200mph have been recorded.

The decision to run them that little bit faster was about status and politics. It adds a large amount to the cost (new trains, testing, extra engineering) and, as they can only go top speed for part of the line anyway, gives very little time saving.

A bit less pointless ambition would have saved money, time and disruption. Notto mention this awkwardness with testing the trains.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Should have spent the money on a water infrastructure/national grid, not to save 20 minutes on a journey.

I'd be happy with toilets that work

Saving 20 minutes on one of the fastest journeys already. You can then spend 55 minutes getting from Manchester to Liverpoool which is about 35 miles. Or an hour from London to Oxford.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

HS2 is about capacity on the current mainline, with trains that stop at more stations running more frequently, not about saving 20 minutes. It's the equivalent of the small side road that goes through all the villages in proximity to the motorway that stops at 3 towns on the same route.
