Unintelligible and all the same. Like an episode of Vera. It’s all a good wind up, especially when I get a richly deserved volley of abuse in return.

I was once on a train where a ‘Mackem’ was indignantly and loudly trying to demonstrate the difference between those accents. Everyone was smirking, because to us it sounded like the only difference was he just chucked ‘pet’ onto the end of each line of the Geordie version, as in “come in for your tea now, Keegan pet”.
