O'Neil saying we're looking to get a couple of players in 20:13 - Aug 30 with 1321 viewspointofblue

I hope it's just his phrasing as we need more than two IMO.

FB
CB (who can cover the other full back position)
RW (being generous, who can play AM, rather than two separate players)
ST (at this stage, Abraham)

There are too many gaps in the squad as it stands. Are we looking to go into the next fourth months with the likes of Furlong and McAteer one step away from the first XI, and no clear back up for Davis?

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

Two strikers.
One right back
One centre half.

Some of you live in a total made up world. We have spent in excess of £170 million pounds. We were never going to fill all the gaps within the financial rules, it was never possible whilst also buying the required quality.

It's not Football Manager, who is coming to play a total of 0 minutes behind Leif Davis? There are actual humans making decisions about their careers here.

Equally, there is a business here. We spent £15M on Greaves, we spent £12M on Mcateer, £18M on Egeli. They might not have all been sensible prices but tanking their value by pushing young players out of the squad does not do the business much help in the long run.

Two more, one at the back (ideally a versatile CB/FB) and one at the front like Tammy would cap an exceptional window.

Should be an exciting 36 hours then! If they were on the fence about any deals I guess they’ll push the buttons now!

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

That's why I'm surprised we haven't paid more attention to upgrading our defence. I thought at least one of our 20m+ signings would be a defender

The back 4 are not bad. They gave very little away last weekend against a good Sunderland side. They aren't suddenly all awful again.

We spent a combined £40M on Diop, O'Shea and Greaves and another £20M on the versatile Outarra.

There is quality there, we just lacked some organisation and discipline today.

No chance. We’ve already spent a fortune. Being realistic a marquee striker (hopefully) and some left sided defensive cover. Unless we’re shipping some out for decent money - eg Clarke or Jaden

Agreed. Can't build a whole squad in one window as much as I would like it.
Striker has been our Achilles heel for a long time. Be happy if we could get one in before the window sits and another defender. Can't see us doing much in Jan unless it looks certain we're will be in the same division.

Have to wonder if Ouattara is worth it or if we should have been more selective with the money we spent on him and looked at an experience defender instead.

We played Greaves, saw him struggling, and replaced him with Burgess.

Egeli, I'm OK with at 10, but McAteer was a stupid signing and I fear what will happen if Fatawu picks up and injury or loses form. I do think Philogene and Mehmeti possibly staying is hurting us somewhat.

It's a fair point about players coming in and playing second fiddle but who is our reserve left back right now? Ouattara? Furlong to RB and the whole defence shuffles across? At this stage I'd have been happier if we'd kept hold of Townsend. It's weird that our midfield and attack has had a complete overhaul but we're playing three defenders from 2024/25, where we were hardly watertight.

I would like to have seen Quattaro at RWB today, with us playing 3 at the back.
O'Shea is a PL capable centre back, in either a 2 or a 3, but we are vulnerable on the right, when attacked at pace with him as our RB.

I guess the hope would be that Ouattara raises the floor across three positions (LB/RB & CM) and sometimes that is a better decision than just pushing the ceiling.

Greaves struggled two years ago and he struggled today but lets be honest he's not the first CB to have a tough game at Old Trafford. They've won 9 of their last 10 home games. Had he struggled like this against Sunderland you could be concerned but up until today and through pre-season he's been great.

Mcateer was a stupid signing but he's 24 and he has all the physical traits to be a decent PL player. Writing off that 12M after one season is silly.

The three defenders playing there conceded 47 goals across a 46 game season last year and two of them cost us £30M. Obviously the hope is they have got better. You can't just replace everyone as you just said. You have to live with the decisions you make in the era of these cost rules.

It’s the whole ‘we need a back up left back!!!!!!!!’ - we’ve literally just spent £17m on Ouattara who’s a Swiss Army knife and cover just about every position on the pitch if needed.

People are just thick.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

"The three defenders playing there conceded 47 goals across a 46 game season last year."

With O'Shea at CB and Greaves starting only half the games, many of them at LB. Our lack of depth and Premier know how at the back is concerning and was exposed again. Fair enough, the second signing might be a CB who can cover FB but that does leave a lack of adequate cover for RW.

We have had a really decent window overall. It feels like we're so close to having a fully competitive squad but are likely to full short. I hope it doesn't cost us.

Think that's right experienced striker CB, OTHER STRIKER AND RB loans probably have to be young but experienced

Ouattara? Agreed. Just responding to a post saying we have limitations to our budget. I hope it works out, and O'Neil will know him from Strasbourg which is a plus.
