For those who do this is where we rank as a team so far this season against various Opta metrics: Attacking Goals - Joint 5th (with Arsenal) xG - 10th (although minor variations here for lots of places) Shots - 17th Shot On Target - 10th Shot Conversion Rate - 4th xG Per Shot - Joint 2nd (we're creating high value chances) Defending Goals Conceded - 19th xGA - 18th Shots Conceded - 17th Shot On Target Conceded - 18th Shot Conversion Rate - 15th xGA Per Shot - 13th % Shots in the Box - 7th % Goals in the Box - 4th Pressing High Turnovers - Joint 10th High Turnovers leading to a shot - 3rd High Turnovers leading to a goal - Joint 2nd Passing Overall Completion % - 12th Final 3rd Pass Completion % - 14th Cross Completion % - 1st Through Balls - 15th

I haven;t got the data, but it seems to me that most promoted teams don't actually get better as the season goes on. I seems that they either stay the same or get worse. Some go off like a rocket (eg Hull) but then fall away, but most seem to pretty much carry on as they start. We haven't had a great start but we certainly haven;t been bad so this sort of imperial stat suggests we'll be OK this season. Now I'll uncross my fingers!

I think the thing that stops promoted teams improving is generally squad depth and that as the season progresses losing a few better quality players highlights the lack of depth. I think this time round we're got a much deeper squad than we had last time round so maybe a bit more scope for improvement for us.

| Stats Rankings So Far on 17:30 - Oct 20 with 676 views | Dubtractor | "There is only one stat that matters, and that's the score at the end of the match" Sarcasm off.... I'd be interested to see how those defensive stats look over the last 4 games, as to my eyes we have looked more secure and given away fewer openings, even against Man City considering the quality they have. I think that Man U second half possibly skews the stats a bit against us. We are clearly playing quite an aggressive press, which can leave us open, but evidently is leading to chances too. | |

| Stats Rankings So Far on 18:57 - Oct 20 with 527 views | Guthrum | One thing that suggests to me is that we could be more adventurous in shooting (Ouattara style) from outside the box. We've conceded a couple of times that way, too. But perhaps it might be worth having a go more often, rather than trying to further work the ball into a position where a shot is very likely to go in - but which often gets thwarted before we get it there. Might lower the xG per shot, but will increase xG overall (which is a better metric of who might win the game). | |

The question for me when I think about survival is whether there are a couple of teams residing in the bottom few places for all those metrics, and who are currently occupying a false elevated position - Hull? Palace? BTW the Transfer Flow podcast team reckon Forest are miles below where they should be, so Friday should be entertaining… They also said that the narrative versus reality for a bunch of those stats is quite interesting - Brighton seen as creating chances for fun, ManU terrible going forwards - they said the reality is that they are actually quite close on underlying stats going forwards - go figure (of course they could be wrong!)
