Hotels in Bristol/Gloucesters/Cheltenham 22:35 - Oct 10 with 5932 views | The_Romford_Blue | As I mentioned the other day, I'm doing the Cheltenham festival horse racing in march and then staying up there for the Bristol City away game on the Saturday. Looking at sorting my hotel out and I really know very little about the area. Tripadvisor ain't as good as I'd hoped for this. So TWTD.. do ya thing. A) Is it easy enough travelling from Cheltenham to a hotel if I booked it in Bristol? B) Any particular good ones? I ain't paying over £600 and it's from the Tuesday night to the Sunday morning. So 5 nights. Any help from you good people would be appreciated. This is TWTDs speciality after all.. [Post edited 10 Oct 2017 22:46]

Cheers Hotels during that week in Cheltenham are upwards of £1750 which is crazy hence the daily commute from Bristol looking the best option. Plus it would be easy enough for the Ipswich Bristol game on the Saturday that way. Meaning Saturday night I could have a decent nights kip and then get home from Bristol to London on the train pretty sharpish. That was the plan in my head. The best one I've found was a holiday in for £516 in Bristol but it has a swimming pool, sauna and gym in which is pretty cool.

There aren't that many coaches (no buses at all) between Cheltenham and Bristol any more. Train is the best option. There are shuttles up to the racecourse.

Yeah I'd get the train anyway tbh Shuttle bus maybe from Cheltenham station to the actual racecourse but that would be it. For what it's worth, this is the hotel that looks like the current favourite: http://reservations.lodging-world.com/hotel/gb/holiday-inn-bristol-filton.en-gb.

Other options include Worcester (train in the opposite direction from Bristol). Tewkesbury is probably still too close to avoid the price hike. Gloucester might be. I know some people who come up for the races stay as far off as Ross-on-Wye, but they're driving. Might be worth checking things like airbnb, I know people let out spare rooms, coal cellars, garden sheds, etc., for that week.

Long way from Temple Meads station (about 5 miles), tho reasonably close to Bristol Parkway (where trains to & from Chelt stop).

Cheers Guthers - I'll give that a look tomorrow Anywhere with decent train links within 45/50 minutes to Cheltenham is alright tbh. That's the main thing. Ideally a hotel if possible

I would offer my cellar, but the damp and galloping mould might do for you.

If it's close to the one that links with Cheltenham, that is even better. I hadn't got to that bit of research yet. I did see it's a 45 minute train ride between cheltenhama and Bristol though which is ok. A commute like that for a few days won't kill me. Will do some more research tomorrow but thought I'd put the post up tonight in case any night owls has some decent info. Night bud

Cross Country trains don't usually sell advance ticket fares as the trains are so packed so might add a few quid on. Not sure if any local train operators. Shuttle bus a few quid, worth it for some of the sights on the return trip alone.....

I saw Dancing Brave in 1986 what a horse, what a day.Trouble is every Cnit had a light blue Ford Escort.Newmarket High street is scenes on raceday you can Fck, fight, drink, eat curry it is a great day out E huhges and M Channon were bigging it up.I told Channon he was a scummer for playing for Nodge.Nice guy as it turned out. Hotels in Bristol/Gloucesters/Cheltenham on 23:59 - Oct 10 with 4872 views | severnside_blue | There is a travel lodge in Gloucester and they are throwing up a new premier inn down by Gloucester Quays which should be open by festival time. Also see the station hotel, new county hotel and the imaginatively named central hotel Gloucester. I suspect all will be booked/stupidly expensive. Every crappy pub within 30 miles seems to rent out rooms during the week. If you are on a budget Bristol may be the best option, trains will be jammed full of "refreshed" race goers, there is a shuttle service from the station to the course but expect to queue everywhere. Avoid the best mate enclosure AKA the cabbage patch, good view but full of pissed, fighting scoucers...and take your coat..the wind can be rather bracing.

The fast trains start at Temple Meads, call at Bristol Parkway (to connect with South Wales trains), miss out Gloucester then stop at Chelt. The slow trains take about half an hour longer. Thinking about it, Stroud and even Swindon are within striking range (the former by bus as well).

Not any more. Numbers of the Irish have been well down for the last couple of years. Lots more Londoners nowadays.

Hotels in Bristol/Gloucesters/Cheltenham on 00:17 - Oct 11 with 4842 views | itfc56 | Ibis next to Bristol Temple Meads station is new and ok - regular train just under 40 mins to Cheltenham. If you book via Booking.Com you can usually get free cancellation so if you do get something better no loss. Prices probably hiked a bit for festival week but still should be well within your budget.

So I'd get a refund if I paid for the £516 one this month but then found somewhere else after?

Why pay 500 quid, and ticket money to commute everyday, and travel to and from station everyday, and waste time with that commute, when for 300 quid less you could have a basic room 30 minutes walk from the Racecourse, and only have to make the journey to Bristol once? Or for 100 quid less get a nicer room, nearer, and with breakfast included? More money in your kitty to enjoy yourself with, and lots more time.

I like the idea of the free gym and the free swimming pool. I also would prefer being in a hotel to a bnb. Breakfast is included in the £516 one too. If I'm gonna do it, I may as well get a decent room rather than a small room that's a bit cramped.

Marriott is in city centre and looks as if it is £1 more. Get a decent breakfast at Marriott, Holiday Inn Express breakfast is limited. Have you considered you will be away five days and you may not be permitted to take your luggage into the football stadium. You presumably want to do something in the evening, especially if you have been in a winning streak. City Centres are usually better for that than a hotel 4-5 miles out.

Because of the luggage in the stadium issue, i would stay in the hotel until the Sunday morning
