https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/grenfell-tower-victims-hotels-ho

30m spent on hotels whilst 150 families have nowhere to live. 6x the inflation adjusted cost of building the tower.

Of course they need somewhere to live but surely the council could have spent this money on somewhere better than hotels for them?

Blimey, that's nearly ten times as much as it would have cost them to actually put proper fireproof cladding in the place in the first place.

True. But the Council cant really win.

They would have been slaughtered if they displaced the families outside of the area, so accommodating 100's of people in the most expensive postcode in the whole of the UK is going to cost a hell of a lot of money.

And equating the cost to a notional £6.2m is frankly ludicrous. Poor journalism.

Agreed that inflation adjusted comparisons are usually deeply flawed.

I was thinking more along the lines of actually finding them rental accommodation they could at least make a bit homely.

If they found each person somewhere private costing 5000 per month it would still only come to ~12m.

Agree they are on a hiding to nothing.
Would also be interesting to see how many displaced residents have been offered housing but have turned it down...trying to find housing near to the site for so many is nigh on impossible.

I know a family who have turned down every offer of a new home. They are waiting to be offered a place closer to Grenfell

This whole tragedy shows just how unpreaprred council & government really are.
That coupled with the council woman who stole from the Grenfell fund makes one just a little bit sick with society

For me this is a bit of a bug bearer, fair enough they want to be closer but the council have offered them a place, so have done there duty. Like I say fair enough if they want to be closer and turn down the first offer, but to then turn down other offers, if so they shouldn’t have their cost covered while they wait.

Depends what is offered.
Councils have a duty of care to their tennents.
That doesn't mean they can stick the in any old place
Due to the policies adopted after 2010 many Londoners have been displaced by councils that is why cross rail 2 is being built at cost to the taxpayer.

None of this is good for the people.

So you think Crossrail 2 is a Tory plan to allow people they have displaced to be able to get across London?

It's been proposed since the 1970's and is fully supported by the current Labour London mayor.

Quite some leaps there. Also nothing to do with the subject.

It’s scary to see how much money is wasted when a problem is made worse by the usual shambles of socialism. A national disgrace!

Ah yes, that well known socialist policy of not spending money on council housing meaning that it's inadequately protected, farming it out to the Efficient Private Sector and being surprised when it burns down and means they need re-housing at great expense.
From a Conservative-led council.

Those people would have been paying their council tax as well and they would have been paying the company looking after the building as well. Both of them let them down.

...WAGES.
Seriously what is your problem here? Poor people, disabled people and children have a right to housing and the council which contributed to them NOT having housing has a moral a legal duty to ensure that.
