I thought it was harsh but there’s been penalties given for much less in the champions league, etc this season so it was always going to be given

As a defender, where are you meant to put your arms? An behind your back is surely unnatural no? It's crazy..

How, as a defender, do you stretch to block tackle or block a cross or pass without arms out? As you say by side or behind is utterly unnatural! VAR is a farce and needs to be removed.

Agree with the pundits in that players will also now be trying to chip the ball up in the hope of striking defenders arm now, they have to change this stupid rule, well change a few but start with this one and quickly..

Surely the problem is not with VAR, but with the rules on handball and their official interpretation? In reality, the game needs a tilting back of the balance towards the defence. Fewer (penalty) goals, but will encourage attackers to stay on their feet and try to shoot.

In this example, on reflection yes. I fear strikers are going to aim the ball at defenders arms. But V.A.R. is already skewing the game towards more penalties before the change in handball interpretation - see World Cup 2018.

Quite. Its pathetic. The rule worked fine before - except for those ignorant about it. No longer will defenders be able to try to make blocks because of the penalty risk.
| The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to the presence of those who think they've found it.

One of the issues in its cricket equivalent has been that it is used not so much for correcting obvious mistakes as for going after marginal chances. Something which was tackled by limiting the number of reviews available. Maybe something similar could be done, giving each of the captains, say, two chances to challenge a penalty decision (either for or against), forfeited if incorrect. Otherwise go with the on-field ref.
