Positive Covid-19 recovery story on R4 09:00 - Mar 16 with 1399 views | unstableblue | A lot of grim news around. But it was interesting to hear a first a hand account of someone who has contracted the disease and is now almost fully recovered. Not enough stories and detail from people like this in the media; the metrics state 21 recovered from the 1395, but that feels misleading. She contracted in NY (where they stated there was no infection!) came back had early symptoms, got tested at a pod, confirmed. Very dry mouth throat, persistent cough and fever. Then led to achy bones, and flu symptoms for a week. Limited Paracetomol taken. Just tired and grim in bed. Now out the other side. Made me feel positive.

Totally. There's a worrying lack of perspective oing on here. We've lost the plot as a species.

Just about to find out how my work is going to plan for the next week. It may be a great chance to hit the gym, get some miles in my legs, get some extra cricket nets in.

The latter is potentially a big issue, tho, as is logistics. Imagine 60% of the population in bed ill at the same time, with 20% of those needing hospitalisation. That is why it's a public health issue.

The difference with Dunkirk was we knew where the enemy was, from which direction they would strike and even approximately when they might. There was a lull in which it was pretty obvious what had to be done and the approach needed to get there. With fighting a disease, we do not know where it is lurking, it emerges without warning or, sometimes, any obvious route. Currently we have no means of combatting it, or really any plain and effective plan. The best that can be done is to mitigate the disaster when it gets out of hand. Where, however, you are absolutely right is in terms of community spirit, pulling together, looking after one another, shunning hoarders and profiteers, looking to put the minimum strain on the system as it reaches maximum load. Also to celebrate successes, however slight or ephemeral - recovery rates, for example, or improvements in the major hotspots. Thirdly, while acknowleging the grim situation, to keep public spirits up - reducing the mental health strain people are under, plus there is a degree of evidence that a positive attitude at least helps survival and recovery of severe illness.

Positive Covid-19 recovery story on R4 on 10:03 - Mar 16 with 1186 views | clive_baker | This is the issue with how the UK and every other country is measuring it's stats around how many have been effected. I read somewhere that they think the true number could be anything up to 100,000 people in the UK, 35 of which have died. Perhaps another few hundred of those who are still fighting it will too. We might find that the mortality rate isn't a great deal different to Flu (0.2%), the difference with this thing is it's a new strand and therefore nobody has had it before and built up immunity. If 'regular' flu infected 80% of the population this year it would have a similarly damaging effect, largely on those that are least equipped to fight it off. It's terribly sad, and as has been said before, the absolutely key thing is to make sure those vulnerable people are protected from it, or when they do get it there's care for them. If 1,000,000 in the UK would be susceptible, and half of them get it, we need to make sure that's 10,000 per week for a year, not 100,000 next week. Keep following the advice. Wash your hands regularly. Self isolate if not feeling 100%, take no chances with that. Be kind. Look out for others. Stay positive.

Your last para was what I was aiming at. There has been a really lovely community spirit here. We've offered to help two elderly, one whom is not 100%, neighbours. Loads of others doing the same. It's a great chance to show the yoof of today just how we all pull together when things get sticky. Our 7 year old is excited about helping and the others, serving soldiers as gearing up for a very busy time!

I've actually stopped the gym because of the outbreak. All those machines that have been touched by others. Not to mention it's in central London and I've just moved to Crystal Palace.
