Whilst Covid 19 is in nearly every African country it's not yet hit the curves it has in the West and fingers crossed it won't.

Stats like this are really worrying if it does though:

"The Norwegian Refugee Council has warned that there are currently three ventilators to help save the lives of coronavirus patients in the Central African Republic, a country of almost five million people, Jon Henley reports."

3 ventilators for 5,000,000 people. The equivalent of 36 for the entire UK.

I know we need them here and in Western countries but if it kicks off in Africa we are going to need to be ready to send some quickly. I saw Ford are going to make 50,000 in 100 days and 30,000 per month after that.

Agreed.

Of course, the vast majority of our efforts will be UK-focused - and that's part of the global responsibility too. Just hope that we don't get Covid-19 fatigue when it's time to help out the rest of the world.

Having said that, we normally don't give much of a stuff collectively about malaria, malnutrition etc. that take millions every year. So it would be bittersweet if we do help others around the world because we want to contain a continued risk to ourselves and our own wellbeing.

Have Ford said that, or Trump? If the latetr I doubt the accuracy.

Of course- staffing will be a massive problem in places like that anyway. Noone trained to use them at all.

Hopefully the worst of the epidemic will have passed in Europe by the time it gets bad in Africa, so we can send them some of our by then spare capacity.

Ford have said it:

It's a new design made in collaboration with GM which uses air pressure instead of electricity.

I imagine the Chinese will also be sending a lot of stuff, given their already deep involvement in the continent.

Is there some merit in these new CPAP masks too? They could be deployed easier because there's less specialist training needed to use them. With a ventilator you also need someone who can intubate and someone to monitor the machine.

Have said it before - the issue in cities like Lagos is going to be a nightmare. Heard they locked down last week - but not spoken to anyone there in person. The density in the slums means isolation really is a pipedream - especially given so people have no savings and/or government support so have no choice even if ill.

So not only will it hit parts of Africa badly, it will be the poorest parts that get it worst, no doubt at all about that.

Trouble with CPAP(and indeed any kind of non-invasive ventilator) masks if that the potential for 'aerosol' generation is massive.

And then there's the filtration and cleaning of them between punters, not to mention training in the safe use and monitoring of them.

Whilst we're not *not* using them here, it usually involves very careful discussions between about 2 or three specialists(self included).
