In the wake of Peter Bonnetti's death 08:59 - Apr 16 with 697 views | GeoffSentence | I have watched the highlights of that 1970 WC semi final against W. Germany for the first time. That's another game we should have won. 2-0 up and a clear foul on Lee in the penalty area which should have been given. Close chances going awry until the Germans had the purple patch and scored three goals. Even then there was another clear penalty that we should have been given, and a whole bunch of other missed chances. All in all a typical England performance and two more grievances that I didn't know I should have but can now nurse for the rest of my life. One against the Germans for winning against when we should have beaten them comfortably, the other against the ref and his Argentinian countrymen who robbed us, robbed us I tell you of that game. I am also mildly vexed with the Mexican crowd who seemed to be behind the Germans for some reason.

In the wake of Peter Bonnetti's death on 09:12 - Apr 16 with 661 views | ElephantintheRoom | Lots of reasons for being on West Germany's side. Ramsey had stirred up a south american hornet's nest in 1966. A certain shoplifting incident 4 years later added fuel to that fire. Argentina was a particularly welcoming bolthole for German 'businessmen' post 1945... and you might recall that Britain had taken possession of a couple of Argentinian islands that wrankled as much back then as it did a few years later. It's one of the more interesting distortions of football mass hysteria that the 1970 Brazil team was the best team ever.... it might have been only the 4th best in just that world cup. England had already shown themselves to be at least as good before playing West Germany to a state of exhaustion in extra time... who then suffered the same fate against an exceptional Italy side who themselves could still barely stand when the final was played. If you can find it have a watch of the Italy v West Germany semi final

Ramsey - while a great manager - certainly didn't do PR. He famously called the Argentinians "animals" in 1966 & England didn't help themselves in 1970 e.g. by trying to import all their own food (which was impounded by the Mexican authorities) & using a Leyland bus, which was inferior to other makes. The West Germans engaged with the locals (Sir Alf was notoriously suspicious of foreigners, especially Scots) & had a good will message in Spanish on the back of their bus. Overall, though, I think the Mexicans wanted a South American rather than a European team to win the cup, which realistically meant Brazil & England, as the holders, were seen as the biggest threat.

And who can forget his famous reply to a journalist who doorstepped him the day after England won the World Cup. 'Go away. It's my day off'.

Hadn't heard that about Sir Alf and the Scots, although Alf's privacy force-field was always switched on. He did have Baxter, Moran and Leadbetter as regulars in the League Championship winning side.
