This might be the most telling knife in Trump's back yet - Colin Powell comments 04:58 - Jun 8 with 1888 views | WeWereZombies | https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-52957113 Not so much the "We have a constitution. And we have to follow that constitution. And the president has drifted away from it." and "He lies about things, and he gets away with it because people will not hold him accountable." although they are damning enough but Trump's lame response of calling Powell a 'real stiff'. I know Trump supporters will carry on Trumping but this surely must put further distance between Trump and regular Americans.

This might be the most telling knife in Trump's back yet - Colin Powell comments on 05:31 - Jun 8 with 1834 views | SpruceMoose | You'd like to think so right? He's called more highly regarded people worse things and it's made no difference though. I do have a question though. Where have all these Republicans with their new found crisis of conscience been for the last four years? Where were they when kids were dying in cages? Where were they when the president was mocking disabled reporters on TV? Where were they when he was belittling John McCain or making racist claims about Obama's nationality? Where were they when he was grabbing pussy and threatening women to keep them silent? I'll tell you where. They've been busy enjoying their tax breaks, their right wing judge appointments, they've been quietly cackling about getting all the dirty little things they have always wanted but haven't been brave enough to come out directly and say. Trump has been their simple, loathsome idiot. Now the end is in sight, they've got what they wanted and they're preparing to cut him lose while trying to save their own reputations. Don't be fooled. Don't forget how silent these people were until five minutes before the finish line. Ten years from now you won't find anyone willing to admit they supported him. Don't forget. They're complicit. In many ways they're worse. There are no good Republicans left. [Post edited 8 Jun 2020 5:35]

How about 'Sprucey, pulling the rug from underneath those most influential so that he can wrap himself in it and stay warm at the edge of Hell freezing over'? I'm not even going to charge you HK$15.99 plus GST for providing your new strapline...

I remember Lyndsey Graham was particularily scathing of Trump right up to the GOP convention and didn't vote for Trump in 2016. "He's a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot ... He doesn't represent my [Republican] party ... I don't think he has a clue about anything ... He is empowering radical Islam ... You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell." Four years on and Graham seems to have changed his mind and defends Trump whenever he gets the opportunity. If Trump loses in 2020 then I can't wait for Grahams rewrite of history regarding what he has said/not said about Trump.

It's a bit like the modern Tory party. Take for example Matt 'Father Dougal' Hancock - more than happy to spout off about how bad a no-deal Brexit would be during his leadership bid, but is now willing to pretty much sacrifice everything - principle, credibility, dignity, etc etc - because he's got a chair at the top table. All those forelock tuggers who spoke loftily about sacrifice falling into line over Dominic Cummings.

This from Anne Applebaum builds on that rather well. It's quite long but worth reading: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2020/07/trumps-collaborators/612250

I'm not totally convinced that he had any of those things to sacrifice in the first place. https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/matt-hancock-climate-crisis-environment-car

A Mayor of London once said this about Trump "What he's doing is playing the game of the terrorists and those who seek to divide us, And I have to say, when Trump says that there are 'no-go' areas in London, he's betraying stupefying ignorance that makes him frankly unfit for the office of the presidency. I would like to invite him to come to see the whole of London and take him around the city, except I wouldn't want to expose any Londoners to the unnecessary risk of meeting Donald Trump." That Mayor was Boris Johnson. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I wondered where that piece was going to begin with, I even paged down to check that there was anything about the United States before going back to resume reading. For someone like me, I pay little attention to the detail in American politics because it is so full of rabbit holes, this is a great article because it lifts the covers off the opaque minutiae with its oblique angle, an approach I find more likely to lead to veracity myself. But it is a long read.

The article from The Atlantic that Steve_M posted below yours is a very telling indictment of this Lyndsey Graham, who I had never heard off as I do not follow US politics closely. Hence my noticing the criticism by Colin Powell as being so significant. Powell is internationally recognised and has a track record, whatever you think of his affiliations, of service at the very highest level. Pretty much an undisputed heavyweight champion of the World amongst all these other bantamweight fairground punters.

I'm convinced they have something on Graham. Not about his sexuality, something else worse. Not putting it on here though! His complete turn around on Trump was too abrupt for them not to have.

Bumping this and must also mention, did I not do so already?, that I once successfully heckled Mark Steel to the point that he was speechless for almost a minute. But really bumping this so that anyone who has not noticed the thread before and has a couple of hours to spare can read the rather vital 'The Atlantic' article that Steve_M provided a link to.
