It's just a daft old song.
Yup, antiquated and arrogant, highlights some of the very worst about being British in my opinion.
“Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. The nations, not so blest as thee, must in their turn, to tyrants fall, while thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free, the dread and envy of them all.”
It’s just gross.

'Rule Britannia' is particularly racist-retired-colonel-at-the-golf-club with all that 'rules the waves, have at you johnny foreigner' stuff. Nowadays, we don't do that so much as waive the rules.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

And historically inaccurate.
Tens of thousands of British subjects (mainly from Ireland and Scotland) were sent in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to the colonies in America, sentenced to 'indentured servitude'. Or slavery.
Furthermore, at the same period thousands of Europeans were captured by North African pirates and sold into slavery.

So slavery and a failure to rule the waves.

Have you not clicked on the link?
Nope, I’ve not clicked the link as was already aware of the story. Apologies, blundered my way through the a bit there due to skim reading, as I also missed BB calling it racist, again, apologies.
Regardless, It’s undeniable the song has some gross colonial overtones, not sure I’d go as far as “racist” but it’s certainly a product of a bygone era that doesn’t represent anything good about Great Britain.
Still having a good chuckle at your Britney Spears suggestion, mind.

Talking about gross songs that should be rewritten - how about the English National anthem. Surely I mean the 'British' national anthem? well no I don't. We re-wrote the anthem as the 4th verse read as.....
God Grant that Marshal Wade, May by thy mighty aid Victory bring, May he sedition hush, And like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush, God save the King. Confound their politics And curse their knavish tricks . . .
Not much of a 'United' Kingdom in those days. Times change and so should we.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?
