Very cool.

Worth noting that nearly 20 dwarf planets or moons within the solar systems are suspected of having subsurface oceans of one form or another.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_lakes_and_seas_in_the_Solar_System

Coupled with the announcement with regards to Venus it's exciting times. Hopefully they can find a second genesis of life and that will put all the uncertainty to bed.

Would be awesome.

Can't wait for more journeys to Mars, even the first people going.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Are you allowed to call them Dwarf planets?

Shouldnt it be 'Diminutive" or circumferencially challenged?

Planets seem more relaxed about the terminology you use to define them than people.

I seriously doubt we'll see people on Mars in our lifetimes.

With modern technology, there's simply no need when rovers can do all the research remotely. As soon as you start adding life support, everything becomes very much heavier and thus more expensive and laborious to get into space. Time of travel becomes an issue, plus the necessity to get back and increased danger in the event of a mishap. Apart from any prestige value, it's also pretty pointless - Mars isn't a nice place to live, nor are any resources easily exploitable.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I like the idea of a relaxed, chilled planet.

Conjures an image of one tilted on its axis, wearing sun glasses with a large cocktail and smoking something a bit 'iffy'

I'm not too sure about this although I guess it depends how old you are and how many years are left in your lifetime.

I think it's almost certain we will see humans on Mars by 2040 although it could easily be privately funded companies rather than nations. It all depends if the SpaceX Starship actually works as it's pretty game-changing in the amount of cargo and people it would be able to get into space.

Getting to Mars wouldn't be how you've described, the majority of fuel is used to escape the gravity well of the Earth. I think it's more likely it would be like this:

- Starship ferries cargo and people to the lunar orbital base (already planned by NASA).
- A different ship which just goes to Mars is fuelled from fuel made on the moon.
- A smaller ship detaches from that ship in orbit and ferries people to and from Mars.

This way drastically cuts down on fuel requirements and allows for far more reusability - things are more likely to go wrong trying to escape Earth than actually in space.

Travel time is 9 months each way but that can be cut by using more fuel or possibly tech like ion engines which provide constant thrust.

Obviously you are right that Mars isn't a nice place to live so any habitats would be in somewhere like lava tubes. You are also right that robots can do most stuff but if they truly find a location where they think there is like a human at that location is still more capable than a robot and certainly more adaptable.

Really tickled at the line "Mars isn't a nice place to live". Felt like a Mumsnet post about Chatham or something.

Space eh, bloody fascinating.

You really reckon all this will happen in 20 years?! I'd love to walk on Mars in my 70's!

Well I don't think it will us walking on Mars! Fully trained astronauts maybe unless you've been keeping that from us!

It's certainly possible but there are caveats:

- Something like SpaceX Starship needs to be working by 2030 latest.
- The NASA orbital base needs to be in place.
- The political will needs to be there.

The final one will be greatly increased if there is a realistic chance of finding life due to recent discoveries.

It all depends, it could go very quickly or it could stall just like it did after Apollo.

Part of the issue with travel times is orbital mechanics (you can't just fly in a stright line). Not a lot can be done about that, even with more fuel or constant thrust. Also, attempting to brute-force it using speed means you have to carry more fuel for braking at the other end.

In addition, there are only certain windows of time in which a transfer is feasible. Once you get to Mars, you're stuck there for maybe a year until you can get back.

The concept of mining/manufacturing fuel on the Moon is so far entirely a pipe dream. We've barely delved below the surface regolith to see what's there. Plus all factories and facilities need to be lifted up there and safely landed.

Atmospheric entry and landing is probably the most dangerous part of any trip to Mars. Plus, at that point, you're well beyond any hope of rescue.

The likes of Elon Musk might force something through as a vanity project, but it would be very likely to beggar their companies. The Apollo programme cost the equivalent of over $250bn in modern money, on top of more tens of billions spent on earlier development (Mercury, Gemini, various probes). That was only for the significantly simpler task of going to our own natural satellite.

That's why I said my 70's rather than 60's; give them a few years to get it up and running!

I thought Trump was saying something about going back to the moon? I mean, I appreciate he says a lot of things...

NASA has a confirmed objective to put a man and woman on the moon by 2024, so not just Trump waffling this time:

https://www.nasa.gov/specials/artemis/

It is however entirely dependent on a rocket which has never flown:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Launch_System

And the development of the Lunar Gateway from my other post.

It seems a lot to get done in less than 4 years to me.
