Car lights and MOT 16:23 - Oct 28 with 1865 views | Vic | Garage has just failed my sons car because the dipped lights are on all the time. Ie, they come on whenever the car is running. (It’s an old A150 and there’s an ‘always on’ setting on the light dial in the car switch which allows this) Can’t be right to fail MOT on this, can it?

Car lights and MOT on 16:28 - Oct 28 with 1826 views | jeera | Dipped lights or do you mean daytime running lights? Surely the DRL having an 'always on' option makes more sense? I leave mine on and cannot see why that would be a failure myself but if the dipped lights are unable to be switched off then I suppose that could be considered a problem.

Yet them not working at all on a vehicle registered before 2018 isn't a fail. I suppose if they won't switch off at all that's considered a malfunction. [Post edited 28 Oct 2020 16:33]

No, it doesn’t have DRL - the setting is for dipped lights to come on as soon as the car starts.

There must an 'off' option that isn't working then. I can't see why it's an issue myself but these petty rules are there for a reason. To annoy us.

Just to add to that, didn't they at least advise him how to sort it? I have to say this year my car failed on just windscreen wipers and the garage just rang me and asked if I wanted them changed. So they popped on a new set and passed it. Also a number plate light wasn't on so the guy gave it a tap and it came on so that was fine too. Last year at another place one of my daytime lights wasn't working but the fella just fixed it for me on the spot. You'd think it would be no skin off their nose to help your boy out.

Halfords! They just go by a book and don’t think about helping anyone out! Despite him suggesting that it may just be the light switch they need to turn to a different setting they insisted they needed to check the electrics out!

Avoid Halfords and the like. Find a small, honest independent garage who will fix any issues and pass the car. For half the price.

When daytime running lights are disabled, the light switch functions in a logical way - O gives lights off, A selects auto and so on. When the daytime running lights option is selected from the menu, position O now functions in the same way as position A. Check the vehicle handbook to access the vehicle menus.

Cheers Newcy - we’ve done that and it’s wry clear. Unless we’ve misunderstood what the mechanic said there is no way he should have failed it.

Do the lights still come on when in the off position after turning off the always on option? If so, it could be a problem with the SAM unit. Which is the Signal Acquisition and Actuation Module. It’s quite common on them I believe.
