Lies, damn lies, and statistics 09:49 - Dec 16 with 1102 viewsRoberds

Walking out of the ground last night (feels good to say that) I had a conversation about whether it would be enough to keep beating the worse teams in the division while losing to the top teams. By enough I meant "would we get enough points to go up?".

A bit of number crunching this morning tells me:

We have currently picked up 0.43PPG in our 7 games against the other 9 of the top 10, our win against Accrington being the only points gained. Contrast that to the 2.64PPG picked up in the 11 games against the bottom 14 so far.

Projected over a 46 game season, this gives you a final total of around 82 points, enough to make the playoffs in pretty much every completed League 1 season.

The obvious problem will come when we get to the playoffs and have to face one of those top teams. Lets hope its Accrington.

Or alternatively we could aim to do better with the squad that we have, win against top teams and get promoted without the playoffs.

That needs either a new manager or a total change in everything Lambert is doing and is about.

Yeah, Accrington in the semi final and final please

Although, our record over the past two years against them is W2 L2... so not exactly in the bag.

Depressing though isn’t it? The plight of this club is so enormous that scraping into League One play-offs and fearing an inevitable defeat against rivals with no pedigree is the best case scenario.

I can't see us continuing to rattle along at "walk the league" form against the bottom half, we aren't playing well enough. Crewe, Plymouth and Oxford all should really have beaten us. Burton and Gillingham weren't far off nicking a point.

Yep, to think that the top six in this league would be the bottom six in the Championship ...so if we can't beat these sides then we are miles off the pace to where we need to be anyway, even IF we did go up....

The big variable is injuries and suspensions in Feb/March, "if" we can get some of our better players back for those month's we could well make a push for a top 2 place, we have a more than decent squad, it does of course depend on how other teams can cope with those traditionally difficult month's.
