Confirmed by Reuters a few moments ago. We are already under water here, this is going to be awful once it takes hold. What a state the world's wealthiest countries have allowed themselves to get into.
Interestingly, I've yet to see any of the folks who have spent the last year calling Covid the 'China Virus' call this new variant the 'Britain Virus'.

That's really bad news, the US had nearly 4000 deaths yesterday without the new variant in major circulation. Hopefully with Biden coming in a sensible policy and course of action can be sorted out.
Things aren't great here either. UCLH is talking about converting to a "covid-only" hospital and SAGE have said that even a March-style lockdown probably isn't enough to get R<1 with the new variant.

Edit: Just seen this, some speculation it's been in the US since October which would throw off all the timelines - they won't know for a few days though.

There's a chance it's not the Britain virus. Britain has the best genetics sequencing testing in the world so it might have just been discovered here.
