I get that it seems bonkers but the line is always going to have be drawn somewhere and there’s always going to be people just either side of that line.

Think this is rather harsh, plenty of actual issues to beat up the government about.

It the right think to do to try and contain the SA variant if possible (which it won't be). They have to stop somewhere, for instance if they include your mate then he could say the same about someone 15m from him and you keep going until everyone in the country has to have one.
