I think Andre is correct.

But unfortunately, he doesn't understand what fine margins means.

As a phrase fine margins seems to be misused and misunderstood in football especially when referencing a loss.

An example of a fine Margin was that Jim Magilton interview when he spoke about how much he practised very simply stuff, i.e. using a rebound wall to practise his passing.

You win, by fime margins, if you put in lots of effort in drilling and practising and refining things that work.

Yes we lost by "fine margins" because there are some managers and teams that are better managed.

I think the delusion must be infectious.
They were so much better than us in all departments. We never looked remotely like winning even when we went ahead through hoofball/defensive cockup. They will be disappointed n0t to have scored 4 or 5. We had 2 maybe 3 chances at most and probably got away with playing the last 70 minutes with 11 on the pitch.
We were lucky to only get beaten by 1 goal.
