Imagine Lambert made these 'little tweaks' in our relegation season. on 14:05 - Feb 26 with 592 views | PJH | It certainly seems to me that a different, more defensive, approach may well have accumulated more points and possibly have accumulated enough to keep us up. It was certainly doable.

I agree that our brief bout of 'Hurst' had hugely weakened us but I do not think it was anything like impossible to have stayed up.

The main issue with that team was that there was no one capable of scoring goals, especially after Sears' injury, I hardly think a more defensive approach would have corrected that.

I feared that we might have consecutive relegations. We'd now be in L2.

I fully expected that having been relegated we would bounce straight back up last season and I still think that we should have done. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

By sneaking a few 1-0 wins, not good for possession stats perhaps but quite good for points totals.

Then how come we didn't get more points under Hurst's defensive approach? Also not that easy to keep clean sheets considering our three time POTY keeper's (who'd probably kept us in the league in 16/17) form fell off a cliff.

Unless I'm mistaken I think we've drawn 4 games all season. Obviously you want to win the games you lose, but you'd expect more than 4 at this point in the season, so I think that's been quite a big issue.

Because neither Hurst nor Lambert organised the team in any sort of sensible defensive structure. I don't know how high up on PL's list of priorities or ME's instructions was 'avoid relegation' but if it was a priority PL did not go about achieving it in the most logical way. I believe that several managers would have made a better attempt at staying up, despite the very poor quality of Hurst's signings and therefore PL could and should have done better. I agree that Bart's big dip in form did not help, whatever caused it.

Yeah it was a very weak league that year. I think had we drawn all of our remaining games we could have still stayed up. People credited Lambert for trying to plan a bit but we just had so little to work with.
