Callum Elder in League One Team of the Year 20:26 - Apr 29 with 1370 viewsFPL_Tractor

Just shows, right player, right coach, right club, right role but we very rarely get all 4. Hopefully Cook being able to pretty much pick his squad from a blank sheet means he can fill the squad properly.

He was tidy enough for us when on loan, that Lambert should either have sold Knudsen or actually played him is a more fundamental point.

But, yes, your general point is right.

We had him on loan in the Championship when he had 30 fewer matches of experience. After 30 matches playing in a side that got relegated from that level, he is now doing well in League 1. It is about getting players at the right stage of their career as much as anything.

26 now with 149 games experience, 23 with 77 games when he signed for us. One reason it absolutely does my head in how we start giving our young players pelters as soon as they hit 21!

The key to understanding this is sudden change in form is likely nothing to do with coaching, games, or positioning and most likely entirely due to him now playing in the League One, not the Championship, which was the league we were in when he played for us.

Our recruitment under Evans was abysmal though. It was a peanuts for monkeys policy that utterly destroyed the club.

There's a certain flavour of idiot that relishes the scapegoating of our younger, home-grown players over any others for some reason.

Scowcroft, Richards, D Bent for a short while even and now Woolf and Dozzell.

Playing under a competent manager who actually coaches his players was probably quite a nice change for him after plying under Lambert and Hurst though.

Realistically a club with aspirations to bring people through their academy is only very occasionally going to unearth a player who's bossing men's league football at 21. Most of the time, we should be looking at what they're going to be like aged 24 to 32.

Coincidentally:

Burge, 28
O'Nien, 26
Atkinson, 22
Beevers, 31
Elder, 26
Ward, 25
Grant, 26
Honeyman, 26
McGeady, 35
Wyke, 28
Clarke-Harris, 26

Pretty obvious where we fall down. You need your peak age pros to lead your team and all ours are rubbish.

I am sorry but the Championship is lightyears above this level in terms of quality. Hull should have always gone up with their side as most of them were reasonable players, but Elder is going to really need to step up to be good enough to play in the Championship because so far his legacy there is back to back relegations with Ipswich and Hull! He was always good enough for League One which was proven before at Wigan, but he's so far not stepped up to the Championship. I don't think Hurst and or Lambert can be blamed for that given he was only here briefly.
