Camping - Part 2 16:59 - Jul 9 with 525 viewswkj

So the next question, following up from the 2200 mile tour of the mainland UK, is what are the rules on camping. Are there areas one can just pitch up for the night across the UK?

Also, are there places that let you rent a shower (Obviously on campsites, but I am trying to do this as cheap as possible as I am determined not to enjoy myself)

Have a read of this , if this is kind of what you're thinking. I come across quite a few wild campers and my main bug bear with them is that a significant number dump their rubbish and start fires leaving it for others, me in this case, to clear up. I'm sure you're not that type W anyway but it does spoil it for responsible others. What's the old adage, leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but memories. Something like that. Anyway, have fun.

Wild camping is illegal pretty much everywhere in the UK save for Scotland and Dartmoor.

It tends to be tolerated in hill / mountain areas so lnog as you are above the treeline, away from roads and main paths, and leave no trace.

Cheap basic campsites only cost a tenner a night or so.

I've done it for a short while across England and France. If you stay out of the way and nowhere near paid places then people will just leave you be.

I used bivi bag, rather than a tent. Allows you to set up or pack up with ease. But get one with a mesh and a small pole over the head, if they still make them, as that way you can breathe easily and no bites. A good mat and sleeping bag (synthetic, not down, as you will want it to be able to dry out quickly).

In terms of where, comfort is important. To the sides of farmland is great. They soil is turned over, but stuff doesn't grow there if you are in the right spots, due to hedgerows or trees blocking the sunlight.

Don't light fires there, you will just signal you are there. If you really need cheap emergency food, get some cous cous and just stick some water in it for 10 or so minutes.

Generally most places are easier to get away with it unnoticed, if you are prepared stay up a little later than most and get up earlier.
