When we are up against it, do you ever see us smash a few players, get stuck in and make a point? I don’t want us to be a dirty team but sometimes it’s needed.
We knew they were going to be physical so we have to match that and then the quality should come through

These old chestnuts keep coming out. Not trying enough, not turning up, too nice and so on. They are largely nonsense and the resort of people who can't work out the actual reasons.
The issue was and is tactical and coaching based. Never, yesterday, was there a sensible ball on, forwards, in the midfield. That is to do with shape, patterns of play, and players taking positions and making runs to make space. [Post edited 3 Oct 2021 9:35]

Doncaster tried to play football on Tuesday, weren't very good at it, and lost heavily as Town played much better football.
Stanley didn't even attempt to play football. It was a cross between rugby and WWE. The ball gets booted forward as quickly as possible - often into the corners where they aim to win throw ins or corners so that the 7 footers can come forward.
Their front players harried the Town back 4 so that they more often than not had to launch hopeful balls forward towards Bonne - who has no chance against their 7 footers at the back - so the ball just kept coming back towards Town's goal.
Even when Town scored against the run of play Stanley just kept playing the same way as they had been on the front foot from the word go. As others have suggested maybe the way to play them was to put Norwood and Edwards on much earlier and play them at their own game to some extent.

Accrington were not especially physical or rough. They did have patterns of play and organisation which meant they knew where and how to play the ball.

Indeed. You don't see Man City going to Burnley and trying to kick lumps out of them whilst sticking it long to Gabriel Jesus. Good teams find ways to impose themselves on games and there are plenty of ways to 'win the battle' that don't involve matching up a bunch of lower league cloggers. |  |

I am sure we will "go again" v Shrewsbury but when we play other "Non League" level outfits we cannot allow our "better" players to just turn up.

Football is a physical game and at any level, you have to match the work rate and physicality of your opponent before you can impose your tactics or technical side of the game.
Our own manager admitted, they fell well short in these areas.
This has to come from the players, win your own battles, come out on top and if nearly everyone does that then the better team usually wins.
When we play the likes of Accrington, you know what is coming yet we failed to turn up for that aspect of the game. There will be more examples of this coming up and sometimes, you have to "win ugly" if you want to get out of this league. | |

It's not as simple as winning your battles, when you have the ball you need to use it intelligently rather than letting them turn the game into a purely physical battle. We played into their hands by doing so. That's a failure of tactics and technique rather than not trying hard enough. | |
