Ridley Road, BBC1's new Sun eve primetime drama. *Spoiler alert*. 23:27 - Oct 3 with 2053 views | Ryorry | Really cannot recommend this highly enough - simultaneously shocking, sickening, wonderful and compelling. How could I be a near teen in 1962 yet unaware of such fascism? This, btw, was 1,000 x better than the ridiculous 'Vigil' which preceded it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p09vc7k4/ridley-road [Post edited 6 Oct 2021 12:21]

Ridley Road, BBC1's new Sun eve primetime drama on 13:08 - Oct 4 with 1778 views | Sharkey | I enjoyed it. Some of the characterisation seemed a bit two-dimensional - especially the heart-of-gold Cockney hairdressers, - but also the sour-faced young fascist thug, the gentle old rabbi, the spiv uncle . (Hopefully they'll get a bit 'rounder' as we go on.) In a way it felt more like a play than a tv series, with every character representing much more than just one person. (Having said that. the budget did extend to some quite good mock-ups of Piccadilly Circus and Soho and so on.)

Some of the footage was mock-up, but there was also quite a bit of genuine footage from the time which I really enjoyed, as we lived only 30 miles from London at the time & used to visit regularly. Spotting storefronts like Selfridges! Also worked in central London in 1968, so the atmos, street sellers, hordes of commuters walking over bridges etc etc. was quite a trip down memory lane. I get your point about characterisation, but there were large numbers to squeeze in, and as you say, it was only ep 1 with 3 more to go.

Yes, thought that the mix of original footage blended well with the mock up sets.
Ridley Road, BBC1's new Sun eve primetime drama on 19:38 - Oct 4 with 1587 views | GlasgowBlue | Saving this up to watch. Eddie Marsan and Tracy Ann Oberman have been relentless in fighting antisemitism over the last few years. It’s only right that they get top billing in this series. [Post edited 4 Oct 2021 20:43]

All were superb, but Eddie Marsan was the main standout in this for me - brilliantly cast & he was charismatic, couldn't take my eyes off him. Rory Kinnear as the monstrous Colin Jordon was also great casting, needed to be equally charasmatic in an obviously different way, as he was. Also keep an eye out for Rita Tushingham as the elderly landlady swept up by the propaganda. [Post edited 4 Oct 2021 20:37]

The blending of old footage in with new was very well done and looked pretty much seamless which I suppose is down to very good digital editing, enjoyed the first episode very much, great casting too. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Ridley Road, BBC1's new Sun eve primetime drama on 12:01 - Oct 6 with 1173 views | loftboy | The start was just “wow”. Showing a middle class family enjoying a normal day and ending it by all giving the Nazi salute.

I'll edit my OP with a spoiler alert now! as for me, that opening scene with the young boy (7-8?) and his mother being joined in the boy's bedroom by father/husband Colin Jordan was more shocking & sickening than the physical violence. The mother/wife was actually Christian Dior's niece - have a read of the Guardian article I linked (if you can stand more sickening facts).

Ridley Road, BBC1's new Sun eve primetime drama. *Spoiler alert*. on 23:23 - Oct 10 with 953 views | Ryorry | Bloody hell, that was heart in mouth for the entire hour. Based as it was on real events and people, total respect for all the antifa 62 Group and 43 Group - incredibly courageous to do what they did.

Which is weird because the real Colin Jordan was not in any way charismatic and was instead very much a loser who lived with his mum and lost his job.

You met him?! Quite apart from "dramatic licence", anyone who could attract the following he did must have had some sort of charisma about them. One fascinating thing I only discovered when looking at wiki just now is that he was publicly punched by Denis Healey! - "During the Leyton by-election of 1965 Jordan led a group of about 100 fascist demonstrators at a public Labour Party meeting, and after taking to the stage to berate the audience he was punched by Denis Healey, the then Secretary of State for Defence.[19] The fracas came about because the far right was using the by-election to stir up interracial hatred in order to defeat the Labour candidate (and Foreign Secretary) Patrick Gordon-Walker"

It was very well reported at the time. He attracted a tiny following, the vast amount of people at his rally in Trafalgar Square were Jewish and socialist, and pelted him with eggs etc. He had to be accompanied by Babylon to the nearest underground station after one of his mates got a shooing. He was not a major or popular figure. I haven’t seen the program so I can’t comment on that.
