Respect rural roads - almost 50% increase in fatalities of cyclists in 2020 12:02 - Dec 1 with 821 viewsWeWereZombies

Is it too much to ask for us to allow an extra ten minutes for a journey so that we can slow down a little and take care on bends and when overtaking if it saves lives?

Sure, but I'd like it to be 2-way please, with cyclists respecting pedestrians, other cyclists and horse-riders when on rural roads. Myself & mutt nearly killed by cyclists whizzing silently down middle of 1 in 6 or so single track lane at 30 mph, incl round blind bends and over blind brows, despite us hugging the outside & facing traffic as per Highway Code.

When I'm driving around, I see some bad cyclist behaviour, and lots and lots of bad driving. And when ones weighs hardly anything and the other weighs a tonne, it's easy to see which is the most dangerous.

I respect cyclists and would like them to respect the lives of myself, other predestrians and our dogs, or is it really too much to ask them to expend 0.5 calorie & take 2 seconds to ring their bloody bells (if they've bothered to fit them).

Feelings on fellow road users aside, how the hell do we have speed limits of up to 60mph on country roads?

A motorway is a mere 10mph more and it's insane. I'm more surprised there aren't more fatalities to be honest.

Agreed, although the same principle applies to a cyclist versus pedestrians imo. I always take care when pedestrians are around. It's surprising how many don't (e.g. on shared cycle/footpaths.

At the route of all this is awareness and consideration for others isn't it? Two things that aren't always in ready supply!

Everyone should be considerate, true. And I get very annoyed by the cyclists I nearly hit sometimes because of the way they ride.

But cars kills thousands every year. In safety terms we shouldn't talk about the two forms of transport in the same breath.

Obviously we're kinda on the same "side" here, but

1. The two forms of transport *must* be talked about in the same breath, as obviously they share the same road space (and pavement space too unfortunately -where there are any).

2. Individual pedestrian lives shouldn't be considered as less important just because the numbers of them killed or injured are fewer, as I'd have thought obvious. If everyone rode their bikes like Swanners, there wouldn't be a problem.

If everyone rode their bike like me they'd be very safe, as it's spends most of its time in the garage

On top of that the potholes in the roads near me are so dangerous.

If they want to encourage people out of their cars, Councils really need to get serious and look at making cycling much safer.

Without reading the full report it's difficult to get full context.

Whilst fatalities Rose, as a % of overall cyclists it may have gone down. 5/10 being 50% 10/100 being 10%. To use a lazy example.

Also, how many involved no other vehicle?
Hit pot hole at 30mph and not wearing a helmet.
Etc etc etc

Some time ago I did a speed awareness course, part of which was a guess the speed limit quiz...

Single road, wide enough for one way traffic only, with a side road partially obscured by bushes... National speed limit applies.
But then you could argue that you should drive to the environment and conditions rather than the limit there.

"But then you could argue that you should drive to the environment and conditions rather than the limit there."

Well, yes, that's precisely what I would argue and do.

But a number seem to think the maximum national limit is a requirement, not an option.

Don't get me wrong, on an open empty road I do not want to sit there behind someone who does 40mph regardless. I hate those too.

I just would like people to not see speed limits as some sort of challenge.

I am a cyclist, really enjoy cycling round the country lanes, but I have to agree with you on this.

People need to be more considerate and curteous generally and slowing down a little and giving a little tinkle of the bell to warn people of your approach is a perfect example of that.

It is a little like mask wearing in that it has practically no impact on the tinkler but does good for others in the vicinity.

Generally speaking people seem to really appreciate it when you do alert them with a bell too.

The trouble with cycling in this country is that it is mostly geared up for sports. Most bikes on sale are marketed and configured for speed, same with the gear that's on sale. Drop handle bars encourage a mind set for going as quick as possible too.

If I had my way, we'd have big heavy dutch style bikes, with an upright position given out for free to encourage people to cycle but in a more leisurely laid back manner.

As an aside WifeSentence has been off work for 5 months having hit a pot hole on a country lane, at low speed, face planting the road, knocking herself out and breaking her nose and clavicle.

Aaarggh, muchos sympathies to Mrs Sentence, all best to her for her continuing recovery 👍
