With the exception of John 09:55 - Dec 7 with 1325 views | chicoazul | I don’t believe Ashton has appointed anyone here who he hasn’t worked with before. I think we need to start speculation there really. Was he at Bristol with Derek Mcinnes?

Yes, he was at Bristol City with Derek McInnes. Steve Lansdown brought in Ashton as a consultant in 2012 (Ashton’s consultancy - Tactical Change Ltd) when McInnes was already in charge. One of the first things he did was get rid of McInnes’s good friend, Russ Richardson who was Head of Recruitment. That enabled him to bring in his technical recruitment “team” and the much lauded database (lauded by him!). It saw us sign a lot of journeymen on high wages with little value….that O’Driscoll and Burt, then Cotterill and Burt had to rebuild from. I would think McInnes would tell Ashton to pi$$ off after the Richardson sacking. So you don’t have to worry about McInnes. Russ Richardson rejoined McInnes at Aberdeen.

I though Ashton was at Bristol full time from 2015, so apologies on that. I wouldn't have thought we'd be looking at Derek McInnes in all honesty anyway. He did excellent transfer business for us at Ipswich in his first window to be fair to him.

No apology needed. I think McInnes is a decent manager, was a bit naive with us. But I think you will attract a “better” manager than him. No arguments with the signings made. On paper they were cracking, the hard bit is getting them to play together, and keeping a good squad dynamic for those not playing. Some of them didn’t feel like the type Paul Cook would sign looking at the types he had at Wigan, Chesterfield etc. I don’t follow much of his time at Pompey.

I think personally we will go down the route of 'head coach', instead of a manager of the old school, who tend to have control of all matters. I only say that due to the infrastructure we have built in the last few months. This has been the discussion over the last couple of days on who were actually Paul Cook signings. I think a decent bulk were, with a handful having played for Cook previously, and I think a proportion were deals that Ashton wanted that he sees future value in. The truth is we will never know the truth. 19 new players in one window will always cause the need for extra time to settle, and probably why I think we may have pulled the trigger a little early, but we move on. What qualifications does Ashton have to be selecting players? Not many, IMO. Ashton is CEO & may be competent in that role & could be involved in arranging transfers, setting budgets etc. Gary Probert is DoF & worked with Ashton at Bristol, but his role seems more about developing academy players. I quite like the idea of a competent DoF working with the manager/head coach in selecting players as long as they can work together, but have the new owners put the right structure in place?

Phil’s said before Johnson isn’t under consideration. It feels like it’s Harris v McInnes at the moment. Harris Applies For Town Job 10th Dec 2021 13:51TWTD understands former Millwall and Cardiff manager Neil Harris has applied for the management vacancy at Town, while a number of the other reported contenders are not in the running for the role. 95

You don’t get a dog and then crap on your lawn yourself. The board will almost certainly unanimously approve his choice.

Surely O’Leary will have some major input with Ashton doing the leg work
