Sir Bobbly sent the team out after half time in the second leg with the assessment that if they scored the whole stadium would be lifted and we would not stand much chance but if we scored the crowd would lose heart and we could manage the game out. Mariner's assessment of the circumstances that led to Weir's fifty fifth minute 'not a Worldy, just a decent shot' coming about through Mills getting unexpectedly beaten and Cooper not saving a shot he normally would have done is a little bit poignant.

I've always considered that tie as a bit of a watershed, the beginning of the end kind of thing. Up to then you just felt we were going to win against whoever we were playing. Shortly afterwards with Sir Bobby and key players leaving the writing was on the wall but that feels like a real turning point. |  | | |

We still had a great 81/82 season, for me it was Roma the following season and the accompanying poor start, although with hindsight a 3-4 loss to that Roma side was no disgrace. |  |

We rightly talk about us during that period and earlier as having a very good side, one of the best in England in fact, but Aberdeen had a wonderful team back then and under the guidance of a manager that wasn’t half bad in Alex Ferguson 😉. Hugely underrated, that Aberdeen’s side was full of players that ended up having major careers in football and a manager whose achievements are likely to go unrivalled. | |
