Wait, there are people who film planes landing? They do that as a hobby or a job?

There is a big YouTube subculture of plane identification/insignia changes/windiest landings/scariest landings etc etc, and some semi-professional channels, like this one, can spend a day filming, knock out individual uploads of each plane that landed, and generate millions of aggregate views.

They do that knowing that one day they might have footage that worldwide tv networks will pay big money for. This bloke has had this footage shown worldwide and given interviews.

I'm not going to say that they want the planes to crash whilst they are filming, but if the plane crashes they will make a lot of money.

I believe our own elder grizzly is something of an avgeek fan. The people filming, though, must get bored after a while you would think. Given that 99.99% of flights are incident-free.

Three years ago our flight from Sri Lanka to Gatwick was diverted to Manchester to avoid a landing in strong winds. I'm glad we did; despite the slow cross-country train journey from Manchester to Thetford.
