I genuinely don't think a lot of people know what is coming their way this year. It's going to be painful, rates of homeless are going to skyrocket unfortunately.

Thats insane. And the price of gas apparently jumped 40% yesterday! The government are going to have to do something.

Nationalise our own gas supply, build more suitable storage facilities and stop selling anything other than surplus abroad? Too radical? Edit: I'm also with Bulb so will look forward to my updated monthly charges. Oh joy indeed. [Post edited 25 Feb 2022 16:16]

Something like that. The lack of storage looks a stupid mistake. There will have to be heat subsidies like the pensioners get - for low income families. None of this helps climate change oc. But id consider short term trying to get NS to supply more.

It was a mistake to stop drilling for new gas fields in the north sea. Many people warned of the consequences or relying on gas from Russia and were called old timers stuck in the past

Most of our supply comes from Norway, not Russia. But you can see why some of mainland Europe is torn because they do rely heavily on Russia. Heating is a basic need but yes, I agree it's always been a dangerous game to put any trust in them whatsoever. It was always going to be such a big deal if something like this occurred. I for one, have always maintained it's madness to buy from elsewhere that which we already have on our doorstep, but the problem here isn't about drilling for more, it's about us flogging what we have abroad and then purchasing ourselves form elsewhere. Basic domestic amenities is an area that should never be in private hands. Edited. [Post edited 25 Feb 2022 16:56]

Just had this email pop through from Bulb. Quite some leap: "We're increasing our electricity unit rate from 20.860p to 29.239p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 24.007p to 37.918p per day. We're increasing our gas unit rate from 4.055p to 7.344p per kWh and standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day. These prices all include VAT at 5%."

Just had an email from Bulb on 18:51 - Feb 25 with 1035 views | jaykay | not forgetting the enforced £200 loan to everyone if you want it or not. then you will have to pay it back over 5years. so if your children marry and move out in a couple of years , they will have to pay a extra £120 even though they didn't receive the £200 in the first place

Just had an email from Bulb on 19:05 - Feb 25 with 987 views | Coastalblue | Ours is now £97 per month, that's just electric in a 2 bedroom flat which is 5 years old and has LED lighting throughout. The heating is a communal system, that has doubled recently, despite the solar panels all over the building and heat pumps supposedly heating it. These prices are going to push a lot of people over the edge. I remember the 80's reposessions over mortgage rates, energy rates could see us heading the same way.

Just had an email from Bulb on 19:36 - Feb 25 with 925 views | Swansea_Blue | Use half as much energy and you'll actually save money I can absorb it (not that I'm happy), but it's going to be a hard year for many people. Luckily we'll be heading into the warmer weather soon, but due to the wholesale price lag they're going to be putting the cap up again in September (so much for being a cap!). That's going to be tough for many people. Already there are lots of reports of people choosing between food or heat. Britain in 2022 - shocking (or should be).

Quite the opposite. Given that insecurity around natural gas is driving this price increase and Putin's actions this week is already leading to large crude oil price hikes, the most logical thing to do would be to develop our own energy sources. It's a no brainer. And besides, fossil fuel are still subsidised more than renewables I believe, so financially it make sense to still have schemes like the Green Levy.

It was a mistake to effectively ban onshore wind, nearly ruin the solar industry and completely ruin insulation schemes for the worst-insulated homes, not to mention scrapping the zero carbon homes target (all homes from 2016 were meant to be carbon neutral). All of these things would have significantly reduced our gas consumption.
