What a ridiculous division this year 00:20 - Apr 20 with 2119 viewsSTYG

We were still in with a real chance four games ago after beating Argyle and before we faced Cambridge. Right in the mix.

If we’d have beaten Cambridge instead of losing, held on at Shrewsbury, won at Rotherham on Saturday instead of losing and held on for the win tonight against Wigan - taking 12 points from 12 instead of just 2 from 12 - we STILL wouldn’t be in the playoff places.

Incredibly the playoff teams have been utterly relentless. Yet the teams above them going for the title have been faltering. Rotherham lost four out of six. Wigan lost at home to Cambridge. Two of the top three lost tonight. Almost all three.

The form of the playoff teams over the last three months has been a one season in fifty phenomenon obviously just as we were closing in.

They've all shown they can go on runs of form, though.

You could argue we haven't had a run of form the whole season, which sounds mad. We've won back to back games five times, but no five game runs, fours or even threes. Realistically we were never going to do it, even when we looked good.

Mental league though.

Interestingly of the 6 games played by the top 3 over Easter the only team that didn't win against them was us, twice.

It's just incredible how Plymouth, Oxford, Sunderland, Wednesday, Wycombe, MK Dons, Pompey and even Bolton have had these relentless runs in a division where there's not that much consistency.

Of course the top teams do well across the season, but all of the above have gone on the sort of runs for 8-10 games that only champions usually do. Even we, as an 11th placed team, went 11 unbeaten.

When you consider the top three lost four games between them out of six over Easter, that Hull won the league last year losing a quarter of their games, the division this season is insane. Sunderland have 77 points already and aren't even in the top six!

Which unfortunately is us all over really. Why win games when you pick up 1 point out of 6 but still look good doing it? That’s the conundrum that McKenna has to solve and the playing squad need to have a serious look at themselves. They are still on course to get less points than last year’s squad managed.

It's looking like it may well be 81-83 points just to make the top 6. We had 29 from 23 when McKenna took over, so he'd have needed the equivalent of a 104-108 point season just to sneak 6th.

Which is quite simply laughable.

We'd have had to have matched the greatest league one sides of all time over that half a season just to finish sixth!

That alone speaks volumes on the position Cook left us in, although of course nobody could have predicted the points return of the top six.

Mental isn't it?

McKenna would have us 6th in the league if the season started when he came in with the fewest goals conceded and that was without a pre-season.

Still hugely positive about next season.

Just to be a little bit cautious about what the future looks like, we’ve won once out of our last seven matches. I can’t believe how far off we’ve dropped now, looking at the table.

Our last six game read like this W 1 D 3 L 2 , dress it up however you want, ( and I’ve said this before) we can’t finish teams off, possession and dominance in games means sod all. Last nights game was the absolute personification of where our problems lie and have been all season. I hope McKenna can sort it out, because he clearly has identified it .
