Cricket: really good, thoughtful piece on Joe Root and captaincy 08:54 - Apr 26 with 705 viewsSteve_M

I think I like the fact it doesn't answer anywhere near as many questions as it poses, that in itself highlights the desperation for snappier answers. There's a clear read across into into other sports:

I don't really agree that its a good article. Its almost an unreadable stream of consciousness outpouring, and like you say, it doesn't really add any value to a debate.

At the end of the day, it appears to be saying what everyone else is saying.... Root had to go, but that's more about the failure of the team, than the failure of the captain... if your ship is badly built, there's little the captain can do to stop it sinking, but you are still responsible.

It highlights the fact that long form cricket in England is rudderless, and that is down to the ECB and the counties more than anyone else. Too many stakeholders with their own priorities.

The fact that it offers no solutions, is probably because the answers to England's woes can't be found in changing the coach and the captain. Whilst there have been some ridiculous selection issues, the malaise at the heart of England's test failures, is a failure of batsmen to make big runs, and there's not a host of candidates doing that, and its not like they haven't tried a few different combinations.

Crikeys - that is a tough read - very poorly written which is a shame as the content is reasonable.

There is little doubt that Root is a below average captain though. Nice bloke, decent role model for kids........but tactically uninspiring. Given the amount of experience he has had then that is pretty poor.

Yes the team is not good enough, but in that situation you need an X-factor from your captain otherwise you are just going to drift.

The main issue for a while has been that no matter how poorly he has done as captain, there is literally nobody who can be relied on to replace him. Stokes is carrying too much. Broad will be rotated out. They might have to job share at this rate.

But the point that is being made in this article, is that you get criticised as a captain, whatever, if your team is losing. He could make all sorts of funky field changes, the batting fails again, and they would blame him for silly fields. You could put Mike Brearley in charge of this england team, they would still be s***

Its a bit like the Mick McCarthy stuff.. you can play dull football as long as you win. And I promise you, if we keep playing good football under KM next season, but don't get promoted, he'll be hounded out too.... sport is the ultimate results business, and everything else is just window dressing.

I can't agree. I think it is a pretty poor article, on content, observation and readability.
