Luckily everyone is out and ok, although being checked at the medical centre.
Zhou leaves the track upside down, flips in the gravel, escapes over crash barrier and is collected by the catch fence (which is meant to catch debris, not whole cars).
I think probably the roll hoop is the biggest saviour, but halo definitely wouldn't have hurt in that scenario. |  | | |  |

It's just excellent that the cars are so safe nowadays, in years gone by that would have been awful.
No fractures or anything for Zhou which is pretty incredible.
Race to restart soon, seems bizarre that they go back to the positions at the start of the race.

It is amazing to see.
Interestingly some people invaded the track at the same time and reading between the lines they were protesters. Lucky for them that everyone had slowed to a crawl. Although a crawl is still probably motor speeds!

no the catch fence is designed to hold a car crashing in to it, you hope that the car never gets there of course and its the last line of defence, but its spec'd to cope with major impacts like to contain the crash within the circuit boundary.

reminds me of that Irish priest who ran on the track, which was nearly 20 years ago now, 2003, not just in that they got trackside which shouldnt be remotely possible, and is hard enough even when they do let you on the track at the end of the race.
but in that both of those/these incidents were being telegraphed all weekend that was their aim, and the police knew about it, and yet these protestors still managed to do it, and this time its only the red flag, and some judicious tv directing which meant they didnt get the publicity they wanted. | | | |

I was at the Red Bull Soapbox races today by Ally Pally and at a very similar time of the day there was one of the most awful crashes I’ve ever seen. A soapbox modelled as a VW camper flipped forwards over the first jump and did just shy of a 180 nose flip sending the two man crew face first into the tarmac sliding down at 20-30mph.
It was stopped for 45-60 mins whilst they got an ambulance but thankfully they are stable in hospital. It made me feel physically sick seeing it live and people around me fainted after it happened from shock.
Thankfully it sounds like they’re in the best hands but no idea how bad the long term injuries will be. Really horrible to see and they actually came off worse than Zhou. |  | | |
