I don’t quite understand this one. Presumably Gove was going to resign anyway so by sacking him has Boris not just wasted a load of taxpayers money to get rid? Does that not make even more people irritated by the PMs decisions?

That’ll learn him for leading the ambush this afternoon.

Has there ever been a cabinet with long term vacancies? The number of people that have resigned / withdrawn their support doesn’t leave many left to form a government.

You underestimate the support the party still has for him and everything he represents. Those resigning are mainly positioning themselves for future posts under a new leader. The party have had plenty of opportunities to remove him without doing so. There is only so much sweetcorn.
