Early impressions of the squad 12:33 - Jul 27 with 1894 views | IPSWICHFANITFC | Flexible in transitions, versatile & very athletic. To me it's the most athletic squad we've had in a long while - lots of energy across the pitch, lots of high intensity sprints with our pressing and running in behind to stretch play. I watched Greg Leigh closely last night and he's got an engine on him and fits the athlete mould perfectly. Up and down non stop and no surprise to see him in the position he was in for his goal. Really positive signing and an upgrade on last season and very good competition with Davis. One negative on the match yesterday, we didn't kill the game off which was our nemesis last season at times. I hope this isn't a pattern that follows into this season as we're clearly able to dominate and control games, I'd just like to see a 2 goal cushion before we take the sting out of the game and become a little more complacent. *Irrelevant but I thought Southend's number 3 in the 1st half was a good player. A few bottom end L1 teams should be taking interest in him for me. He would handle L1.

Early impressions of the squad on 13:15 - Jul 27 with 1767 views | clive_baker | We're certainly athletic. I would agree its the most evident in a long while or perhaps ever. We look like a very modern outfit. It's vital for how we want to play with our high press, winning possession high up the pitch. We've got a spine and senior side now at such good ages too, which certainly lends itself to all of that, but also hopefully the mental side of things. Under Lambert we seemed to have players at either ends of their career but few of enough quality in the middle. Those that we did have in that bracket like Holy, Nsiala, Huws, Bishop, KVY, Nolan, Norwood, Jackson often struggled for fitness or just weren't good enough. It often left us relying so heavily on those in the Autumn of their career or those at the other end who were always about 'potential' rather than the here and now. You look through our first 18 now and they're nearly all in and around their mid 20's with the exception of a few. They look fit, athletic, hungry. As ridiculous as it sounds it's like watching a proper, well drilled, adult football team. I think we're perhaps 1 piece of 'X factor' short in the final 3rd, especially as teams will come to frustrate us and we'll need to find a way to unlock them. But I really feel like for the first time in a long time we're the real deal.

'I think we're perhaps 1 piece of 'X factor' short in the final 3rd'. Absolutely this. I think if we somehow got Hirst & Celina over the line (or players of similar quality), that would go down as a very good transfer window for us.

Early impressions of the squad on 21:21 - Jul 27 with 1432 views | PioneerBlue | In my opinion, the ruthlessness to kill teams off comes over time having established a winning habit. Building collective confidence in your team mates and the consistent form of those same team mates means as a team extra risks will be taken rather than being satisfied to settle on a 1 goal lead. There is then need for a striker whom really enjoys scoring goals, it’s not often a team significantly outscores without a striker being on the scoresheet - strikers are the ultimate advocate of goal scoring rather than defending or keeping the ball! Early impressions of the squad on 21:34 - Jul 27 with 1387 views | gtsb1966 | The 5 subs rule SHOULD be a big advantage to us with a squad like that. Some of the so called smaller teams we struggled against last year (Cooks inability to change a game or make subs didn't help) won't have the luxury of bringing on a like for like player we can. As they tire we should have the squad to exploit that. Could score a few late goals this season.

It will help. But as KM said following Tuesday.. we can not afford those 15 minute spells of taking our foot off the gas.. we let sides back into the game in league games and they then sit back. Our subs have a much harder Job.

It's half the battle these days if you can run. Simply being a decent technical unit isn't enough, and that's across any league. Technically you won't get much better than Man City or Liverpool, but they'll be the hardest runners in the league too. I'm hoping we have these levels across the season - physically and mentally.

I do agree to an extent, and I'm sure a lot of them had an eye on the weekend and not getting injured but building habits is key and it's that ruthlessness which is our biggest downfall - whether it's Southend or Bolton.

Early impressions of the squad on 13:35 - Jul 28 with 920 views | Westcountryblue | Ball and Harness are smart additions. It was no coincidence that our form dropped off last year when Morsy, Evans and Burns were injured. Therefore, it's good to have like for like, quality back up in these key positions. Davis and Leigh could add some much needed balance to our play, as we were way too predictable last season, building nearly all of our attacks down the right hand side. I think Edwards will be a key player this year too. He has bags of talent and pace to burn, which is devastating at this level off the bench.

I agree with the additions, they give us depth in such a key area. I was thinking earlier, it was only 4 months ago that we went away to Oxford and although we played well, we drew 1-1 thanks to the late Oxford equaliser in what, at the time, was a big game. On balance it was perhaps a fair result, but it was one that left us 8 points behind them rather than the 5 points had we held on. If you look at that side, we had Thompson at LWB who did OK, but you would like to feel Davis is an upgrade, certainly in terms of suitability to our system. Our central midfield 2 were Carroll (really poor) and Bakinson, who himself did OK, but I would put both behind Evans, Morsy and Ball. We then had Pigott as the lone forward, not really built for McKenna in terms of running in behind and stretching a defence and largely ineffective. Burgess on the left of the back 3 too owing to Edmundson's injury, again he did OK to be fair, on balance. Injuries will always be a consideration, and we'll need a bit more luck there, but I can't help but feel like we've upgraded on that side. In fact Celina is probably the only one you would want back and even there we have Harness as a replacement. [Post edited 28 Jul 2022 14:43]

Not sure it will, think teams will use subs to hold up play and could disrupt our rhythm.

They are still only allowed to use 3 occasions to make the 5 subs which is the same as last season. The only exception is if you make a sub at half time. So this shouldn't affect play.
