Votes for Brexit and of course the next great grift of climate change denier

He obviously hasn’t heard of tides…

Why are these Brexiteers often knuts, climate change deniers, anti-vax, sometimes holocaust deniers and just generally conspiracy loons? Do you reckon they actually believe this or they just know who their audience is and are playing to them (as they seem to get lots of feckwit followers)?

It's because they're thick, but now have a playbook to follow.

Devaluing and obfuscating facts appeals because it devalues knowledge and expertise.

The fact that Darren Grimes is "a thing" is proof of this theory.

Darren Grimes, weirdly, is as at least as much a victim as he is a 'mover'. The new global far right is essentially based around a few multi-millionaires(and the occasional Russian president)exploiting gullible useful idiots to further their aims.

You could probably make a really hard hitting production of 'Faust' based around the global far right/MAGA/Brexit/Putin apologist movements.

Like a lot of his ilk, he only needs to be smarter than the people he's grifting.

By the way, has anyone heard from DaveU recently?

Victim or "mover", my sympathies are directed in other directions.

He's an opportunist tvvat.

Don't get me wrong, he's a c**t. Just one who's too dim to realise he's been played rather than becoming a player. I laughed as hard as anyone else with a sense of basic decency when he announced he was moving back in with his mum and dad.

Its why they talk about 'victim mentality' so much when faced with people on receiving end of genuine prejudice. They're that thick that they assume that everyone else is when they get shafted.

Actually, I've probably got the germ of an actual point there, but I've had a few...

I’ve always thought schools should teach more source criticism especially the need for multiple sources and independent verification of claims.

But they should also teach “self-criticism” so that people are much, much more aware of our very human failings as thinkers and the natural traps we fall into. Stuff like a boiled-down version of Kahneman’s Thinking Fast and Slow. And especially the Dunning-Krueger model.

Tice and others in that thread feel so smug and certain because they are looking down on climate science from the very top of Mount Stupid. Armed with a criminally stupid photo comparison.

I often can't tell whether they are

1. genuinely stupid
2. disingenuous manipulators of the gullible
3. weird comedy acts

4. Driven by a completely different agenda

Increasingly, I see a lot of these people and their reactionary takes as just that. The takes of reactionaries. They’re so afraid of change – and the “threat” to their idea of civilisation and particularly the identity they’ve taken from that idea– that they will literally lie and cheat to fight against it.

That’s not exclusively a populist right issue either. We have very strong reactionaries across the spectrum who don’t want evidence-based change. People are going to be people with all the inconsistency and fallibility that involves.

I would have put them in '2. disingenuous manipulators of the gullible ', but I guess what you're saying is that they're lying and cheating themselves in order not to have to face the reality? Cowards, essentially.

Some are manipulators, sure.

But I think it’s mostly unconscious that they slip into positions that will leave them, their sense of self and their idea of how the world should be most intact. And they just go further and further with their confirmation bias that they end up pretty much as extremists and fundamentalists who know nothing but their own certainty.

It doesn’t help that our politicians and media play up to that tendency.
