Do we play 3 or 4 at the back

Seen it mentioned on here and other social media sites, and there's a lot of difference of opinion on what we actually play.

Intrigued to see the split on here.

I've asked Kieran about it and he's a bit vague, deliberately so I think. Refers to it as a hybrid system, think he said something like three and a half at the back, something like that. It's three at times and four at others is probably the closest to being correct.

It's definitely difficult to pinpoint when it becomes one or the other to.. I most recently compared his style to those seen of Chelsea/City/Arsenal etc, the constant movement of the backline dependent on what's happening in front, it just doesn't 'sit' like a normal backline.

I thought it's fundamentally 4 but changes whether in or out of possession and depending on the phase of play. Donacien mainly starts off as a right back and we have 2 CBs, with them being split by a CM dropping in to make a 3 at times when were on the ball.

Or the other way to look at it is if it was Subbuteo, we'd have a back 4 on the pitch at kick off. But then after a while you've players all over the place (and the keeper's broken off his stick, but I think that's where the analogy starts to break down!).

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

It's asymmetric, isn't it? The right wing-back/winger is more advanced than the left equivalent and Donacien on the right gets forward more than Edmundson/Burgess.

It's unbelieveable really that we're seeing it at league 1 level. There's been some nice tidy sides and of course some horrible yet successful sides, but to watch something so beyond the league is brilliant.

Last season you could definitely compare him to the left sided CB and yes he got forward more as a right sided CB in a back 3. This season he plays much wider than the left CB, he hugs the touchline more like a traditional overlapping RB. That’s what it looks like on iFollow, so I can’t see the whole picture like you can do could be wrong.

We’re very good though. We definitely have a style of play on the ball that’s distinct and the players all buy into. It’s what carried us through last night and the big difference compared to Lambert and Cook’s teams imo.

I actually think we played better stuff during the second half of last season than we have the first half of this. But I think that's just because the style was so new and teams have got more 'used' to us - thankfully we've improved in front of goal and results have followed.

I still remember the Wigan game at home. I know we ended up drawing 2-2 but we just passed them to death. They were kicking for touch most of the game, it was ridiculous to think they were top.

Two a lot of the time, with Donacien or one of the others off up-field. Sometimes appears to be only Walton in our own half.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
