Yes, that is mentioned in Banksy’s link. The timing of Ghafouri‘s arrest is very sinister. As the article sheets it’s a warning to the players who are in Qatar. I wonder if some will attempt to claim asylum once they are out if the tournament. Of course, The Iranian state is an awful regime that has been suppressing people’s human rights for decades. To think that some people have described Iran for its “inclusivity, tolerance and acceptance”

I wonder how easy it is to claim political asylum in Qatar?

They could go to a western embassy. Although I would imagine they are very well guarded by Iranian security. Qatar and Iran have a close relationship so they wouldn’t get much joy handing themselves in to the Qataris. Edited for poor grammar. [Post edited 25 Nov 2022 7:42]

Indeed. Or how they could get to the UK to claim asylum other than in a dingy and then face around 18 months, unable to work, whilst we decide whether their claim is genuine? A claim that you could probably decide in 18 minutes tbh.

The US have the largest military base in the Middle East in Qatar. Their best bet would be to get to the US embassy.

They are. And any players who opt not to return will have family back home. Iranian intelligence was recently active in London identifying Iranian protesters and threatening families back in Iran. The regime will fall, hopefully sooner rather than later. [Post edited 25 Nov 2022 7:47]

What is happening in Iran at the moment re the protests is genuinely amazing, the protesters know full well they are basically committing suicide. I'd like to think i would have the bottle to do likewise - but I'm not so sure.

It would be nice if when/if it happens they (the public) don't end up being fleeced by Westward facing businesses and institutions. I won't be holding my breath!

Yep, very humbling. I always come back to an insight from a white, racist Afrikaaner colleague reflecting on the end of Apartheid. He said you can always oppress people, but soonerr or later they will rise up. And the more you oppress them, the harsher you oppress them, the bigger the uprising will be when it comes. When it comes, I'd expect an awful lot of retribution to the "morality police" and the armed forces. Which is partly why they are so reluctant for change, they know what wil come their way. The lucky ones at the top of society will end up at the Hague. Many others won't get that luxury.

Unfortunately though it's more likely going to be a case of "Meet the new Boss"

Unless the Revolutionary Guard Corps is dismantled, there is little hope of change. They are the regime leadership's* private army - but would overthrow even the Ayatollas if they ever went against them. A law unto themselves, with vast business (and shadier) interests, there's a lot of money at stake. Large in numbers, well armed, equipped and politically invulnerable. They have too much at stake in the current system to let it go quietly. * That's the Supreme Leadership, not the Iranian Government.

Unfortunately, that would leave them open to accusations of "defecting to the enemy".

"Love me for what I am" tattoed along the forearm of one very brave Iran player, zoomed in on by BBC cameraman during the anthem. Some Iran fans in the crowd in tears. [Post edited 25 Nov 2022 10:01]

Be amazed if they can focus on this, they looked very uncomfortable indeed, feel very sorry for them.

Or, perhaps their passion for justice is motivation to play as well. I found it notable how physical they were but also how they seemed to genuinely show concern for Welsh player's welfare after a challenge.

Great result.....a nation is its people not its state. I only saw the anthems due to work but sounds like they were very driven.

As did the Welsh players for them from what I saw (didn't see the whole game). I was wondering/hoping that if Iran do well, this will result in some kind of positive benefit for its people - at the very least an extra day's holiday; maybe a temporary softening of the regime's attitude? and extra motivation for its people to keep going even more strongly and in greater numbers with their uprising.
