I guess decriminalising would be the first step on that road.

The idiot politicians leave the police, NHS, social services and charities to deal with their shameful laws, so unfortunately it has to be an "in spite of the law" approach ...

Indeed, the "war on drugs" is unwinnable. However politicians, especially in the US, delight at laws which give long prison sentences to low end drug dealers. This only creates a career criminal, while plenty of others will step into their shoes.

Strikes me that what is being proposed is the police making a policing decision (that for ordinary users - treatment is more appropriate than prosecutions) and legalisation is something that is not their call, rather one for politicians. Agree it would be a step towards legalisation at some point - somehow can't see Braverman going down that route.

Indeed. It's a war on the poor and excluded, ultimately. Unfortunately Labour will be just as bad as the tories on this. God knows who they get into the focus groups on drug policies - it's the "soft on drugs" headlines they fear rather than more and more lives ruined - health, collapsed families, criminal records, victims of casual crimes ...

But it desn't half bump up the profits of the private prisons Which again brings up the question of what government services are for - private profit or public good ? We over here can see the disasterous effect the former has had, and continues to have, on UK citizens and the economy Every pound paid out in dividends, bonuses and umpteend different boards/directors is a pound not spent on providing the service (look away now, righties) https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/raw-sewage-viewpoint

To completely take drugs out of the hands of organised crime we would need to control production. Easy with weed as you could licence growers in the UK. But not so easy to do with coke etc | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'm sure there is a way. Think it would just take a lot more effort then weed. As the UK already grows a substantial amount of its own product.

Was chatting to a mate in California where you’ve legalised marijuana and effectively the same for organic psychedelics. He likes to partake. What struck me was that point that you don’t have to enter the criminal world to procure, but also the fact that quality and strength is also transparent and clear, and of good quality. The culture seems to be that you can choose exactly the kind of night you want, with surety.
