Portman Road Pitch Highly Commended on 13:15 - Apr 27 with 1164 views | WinchBlue | I can't remember the pitch ever having a bad reputation. I seem to remember back in the late 70s/early 80s the groundsmen used to mow it with a set of Ransomes Mastiff lawnmowers
Portman Road Pitch Highly Commended on 14:21 - Apr 27 with 1051 views | Bramidan | Back in the day our pitch was better than Wembley, supposedly a combination of being built on Portman Marshes and the fact Fison was our sponsors. Don’t know true both statements are but it was immaculate.

Freddie Blake and Stanley Prendergast. They also cleaned and maintained the whole football ground. The pitch was excellent but still looked rather battered by the spring compared to todays pitches. But by comparison to most football clubs at the time, including the Baseball Ground, it was like a bowling green. Jimmy Forsyth and another old player did the training, looked after the treatment room, sponge and bucket and kit, with the exception of the first team shirts that went to a laundry down the road. How times change. [Post edited 27 Apr 2023 14:54]

Mid 90's, look at the Gunn incident, the pitch came up in lumps. We had the half time pitch stompers replacing divots, and a slide tackle could lead to a piece of turf rolling up like a cheap carpet. Topically, whenever i did get on the pitch i was always surprised how bare it was at the end of the season. With the lighting frames on it now giving 'sunlight' all year round its better. However, the vents behind me in the North lower have never been opened, which was supposedly built in to give air circulation when they built the new stand. Evans also cut corners...
Portman Road Pitch Highly Commended on 19:31 - Apr 27 with 861 views | Swansea_Blue | And this is in a year when it’s been cutting up and identified as needing urgent attention over the summer. The grounds staff must have put in almost as hard a shift as the players!
