Are we a curse on Torquay United? 16:26 - May 3 with 1543 viewsMiaow

The last time we went up from the third tier in 1956/57, we did so by pipping Torquay to the Third Division South championship - and the only promotion place - on the final day by means of goal average after we won at Southampton and they could only draw at Crystal Palace. That runners-up spot for the Gulls remains their best-ever League finish and they are still yet to play in the second tier.

Our next promotion from the third division came on Saturday, 66 years later, and it coincided with Torquay - managed by Gary Johnson - narrowly failing to avoid relegation to the Conference South after drawing 1-1 with some team named Wrexham despite taking a second-half lead through Frank Nouble. Brett McGavin came on as a late sub. Before Wrexham’s equaliser, Torquay were only a couple of strikes away from staying up on goal difference as Maidenhead were being beaten 4-0 at Gateshead.

Saturday was quite a mixed day in general for Devon’s professional clubs, with Exeter getting hammered at Portman Road and having to see their great rivals (Plymouth) get promoted to the Championship, although I think they can be very pleased with their first season back in League One.

In that last game at Southampton my uncle played centre forward as Tom Garneys was injured and he scored the second goal with a header, Town scored 101 goals that season and Norwich were relegated.😂😂

Ah, Basil

That's him 9 seasons at Town and many years working for them after his career was over, now we have another right back from Brantham and a good one 👍

Basil Acres is rightly in the ITFC Hall of Fame. Well over 200 appearances in 9 years and worked for the club in a variety of ways after he retired, including for the Development Association - a key revenue raiser for the club at the time.

Proper legend!

After he had finished working at Town, did Basil move to Torquay and open a hotel?

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

Hopefully a curse on clubs from Devon when, on Sunday, Town win away and Plymouth draw away.

2023 year of destiny
