My best mate got married on the day of the 1978 Cup Final. I was gutted I was going to miss the biggest day in our history, then a couple of weeks before, his mum apologised and explained that I couldn’t be invited to the wedding as they were too many guests already and she hoped I’d understand. Reading that, my theory is that your mate realised how much the FA Cup Final would mean to you and got his Mum to diplomatically release you from your obligation to him.
