Post pandemic Championship wages 19:24 - May 21 with 4148 views | Brads | Glenn Murray pointed out on 5 Live that in 18/19, the top 3 wage bills in the Championship were Villa - 95m, Stoke - 58m and Norwich - 54m. Significantly down this season to Watford - 26.8m, Burnley - 26m and Norwich - 23m. That probably explains the perceived drop off in the overall quality of the league and suggests that we should have a decent chance, especially given how the likes of Luton, Coventry and Millwall have competed on lesser budgets too.

Was talking generally about club wage bills across the league and the vast drop post covid which coincides with the perceived drop in quality of the league, not individual players. Obviously there are exceptions such as the clubs I gave as examples in the original post (encouraging in itself), as well as when comparing players, but it’s hardly controversial to suggest that generally speaking, higher wage bills means that clubs can attract better players etc. Surprised if anyone disagrees with that general consensus as backed up by league finishes more often than not. Murray was talking about it in the context of a widening gap between the Prem and Champ (new TV deal will reduce it?) but my point was more that it’s encouraging from an ITFC perspective for next season. We’re in a better position to compete under the current regime than we were previously because of their backing etc, meanwhile the financial competition that we’ll face from the rest of the league isn’t as strong as it once was. E.g. we won’t be up against a Villa with a budget of 95m.

Still under contract until 2024 so he’ll probably be on more than he has been after a promotion clause increase. If we loan, sell or mutually agree to terminate, imagine it’ll only get done if he still gets a decent chunk of what he would’ve earned from staying put.
Post pandemic Championship wages on 23:44 - May 21 with 3236 views | BigCommon | Some good observations...Youd have to say that a drop of multiple tens of millions in team budgets would definitely impact the quality of player they can afford to accomodate.... You could see those averages dropping again, slightly, this coming season.Apart from, perhaps those receiving parachute payments... If so, then I'd agree that we can be very competitive in both, the transfer market and league performance.. I think while things are the way they are. We shouldnt see next season as a free hit..But more of a window of opportunity to push hard, in a division that is less competitive, than previous seasons.
Post pandemic Championship wages on 00:37 - May 22 with 3131 views | ParisBlue | The 3 teams coming down this year will likely increase it again. Villa (and to a lesser extent Norwich) would have been in real trouble had they not gone up that season.

I think it's safe to say that under Gamechanger and K Mac, the days of free hits are over.

Everton only started inserting such clauses last summer, so most of their players don't have them.

Really? Ball is a very good player but injury has robbed us of seeing him at his best. I’d pick Ball over Humphreys every time currently. Humphreys may become a better player but he has a long way to go.

Yeah true. I expect the likes of Leicester and Everton would still have hefty wage bills if they dropped down but hoping they’ll be in such a mess that they won’t be able to hit the ground running.
Post pandemic Championship wages on 17:55 - May 22 with 2107 views | clive_baker | Don't necessarily disagree about the drop off in quality in the Championship, but it's interesting that the 3 clubs promoted from the Champ to Prem last season have all survived (I don't think that's ever happened before), and only 1 of the 3 relegated has gone straight back up.

Happened in 17/18 when Newcastle, Brighton and Huddersfield all stayed up.
