I think I just heard in th news on passing that last year... 13:41 - Aug 25 with 980 viewsNthQldITFC

5 billion mobile phones were 'thrown away'. Is that right? If so, fk me, that's disgusting.

I realise that 'thrown away' must include a proportion recycled in some way or other (for what that's worth), but nevertheless...

What's the matter with us?

I work in waste and recycling, and the scale of stuff that we throw away is genuinely mind boggling.

For example, in the UK we currently throw away over 1 million disposable vapes every week. Each one of these contains a lithium battery, as well as all the plastic casing, and as a relatively new product there isn't recycling capability for it, nor seemingly much willingness from the vape industry to provide this.

I was about to post about 'disposable' vapes, it's disgraceful that these things should be allowed, or at the very least, manufacturers should be forced to handle the recycling process. How about you go and buy a disposable vape, the shop asks for your used vape (most people go through several a week), which they take and return to the manufacturer, if you don't return one, the price is double?

As for the phones stat, that's rediculous too...I know there are a lot of drug dealers around, but jeez.....

Reckon there's quite a few 'burners' included in that total!

As for the vapes - can't imagine it will be long before some regulation or even a ban comes their way. They only really appeal to kids anyway surely?

More the case of an estimate of the number of devices upgraded, as it’s based on new sales data. Still, obviously a problem if phones are being hoarded (I’ve still got all my old ones, so will now look to get them recycled).
